Why did you suddenly remove AI features from Premium?

I’ve been using Premium for over five years and I loved it. The addition of AI features to Premium was fantastic. So why did they disappear after such a short time? Now I’d have to purchase another level of membership- WHICH COSTS MORE, OF COURSE – the new Silver Plan. This move really stinks and is a huge disappointment to my long term Premium membership. You just yanked it out without any explanation, showing clear DISRESPECT to the Premium Members who enjoyed it for only a while.

I’m considering cancel my once positive relationship with DayOne.

  • Hi @carriecarrie14

I’m sorry this came as a surprise. To clarify, the AI features were never advertised as part of the Premium subscription, they were part of Day One Labs, which provides early access to experimental features while they are in development. These Labs features can be removed or changed at any time, but we’ll do our best to make that clearer in future.

    Dear Donnie,

Thank you so much for writing to me in response to my negative feelings about removing the AI features from my Day One account. Now I understand, and I apologize for expressing my strong disappointment to the removal. I really loved those AI features, especially the image creation one! I hope I can afford the GOLD one day.
Thanks again for explaining the reason behind its vanishing.
    Sincerely,

    Carrie

The whole “adding an extra tier” thing is a little annoying. Are you continuing to develop silver? If you are putting all your effort behind the gold tier from now on, which seems likely, then it might indeed become an issue for many users. I would expect a company to keep developing its core product (now named Silver), accepting that this has costs, but those are the normal business costs associated with keeping your product at the top of the tree. The expectation is that the product will then generate more income, or, having demonstrated market dominance, you can moderately increase prices for it. It seems like you are milking your current user base by denying new features unless they agree to a price hike. Now maybe this is unfair; maybe you have a extremely well thought out progression planned for both products (you are treating Gold as a new product in this scenario) but maybe, you dont, and Silver will now fester in a non-updated form until the end of time or until you close support for it. Who knows? But generally, this cannot be seen as being good news.

  • @chrisgrantham28eb856527 we are continuing to develop the Day One app as a whole, including features of the Gold plan, Silver plan, and the free Basic plan. We have many features and improvements planned for all tiers.

Time to make some kind of commitment then. Specifics. Saying isn’t doing. All I see is development pouring into the “Gold” tier because its a “new” revenue generator. I will be watching closely to see exactly how many “features and improvements” I now get, now that I am a second class citizen. And if you fail to see my concerns in this – be aware that the silent majority of your fee paying customers are exactly that – silent. I found your reply to be bland and not at all reassuring.
