What functionalities should be added?

I’m not sure if this has been brought up as a concise post here, but I think a running list of what users consider “basic / necessary functionality” items should be done.

So, in that regard, please add a reply of what you feel needs attention, should be fixed, updated, etc.

+3 for Photo Editing – there are several discussions in the Facebook group about being able to edit photos. One person would also like to be able to make collages within the app. I agree, it would be nice to have some basic photo editing features. Also, long press to add a caption to a photo does not work in Android. 😺

The lack of feature for feature support in the MacOS version vs iOS is a pretty big one on the to do list, IMO. Still no audio recording on the Mac, for instance.

  • Thank you for taking the initiative to create a thread, @canesshapes0u. I’ll keep this thread open to invite community feedback and forward the feedback to our team as they come.

@pamelaamoore, @pgant – Those absolutely should be part of the MacOS version. I never even thought about that. Thank you!

@staff-bluejay – Thank you for doing so! I’m hoping more people will add to this thread.

I don’t really know how to suggest this, but if you’ve kept a journal for a long period of time, you find your journal covers a lot of different ‘eras’ of your life; whether that’s time in an educational institution, years at different workplaces, years at various addresses, relationships, etc. I would like the ability to define ‘eras’ – set a start date and an end date – to then view all entries from those pre-defined periods. In a similar way that tags are displayed on each entry, perhaps eras could be displayed at the base of entries too?

  • Hi @sunsetdrivea465, thanks for the suggestion! This is actually a great use case for tags, which are already available in Day One.

You can create tags for each era of your life – for example, “University”, “First Job”, “London Years” etc. – and apply them to the relevant entries. Tags appear on each entry and you can filter your entire journal by any tag to see just the entries from that period.

A few tips to get the most out of this:

    • You can apply tags to multiple entries at once using bulk edit (long-press an entry in the timeline, then select additional entries)
    • Use the Filters feature to view all entries with a specific tag
    • Tags can also be combined with other filters like date ranges for even more control

Here are some guides to help you get started:

The one thing tags don’t do is auto-apply based on a date range, so you would need to tag entries yourself. But once tagged, the experience is very close to what you’re describing.

I know I am replying to my own thread MONTHS later, but it won’t let me start a new thread.

I found my “wish list” of features that would be great to have added:

    • Have a timeline feature that would allow generalized dates and times
    • Improve place editing capability (to include the ability to edit old Favorites that were saved in the first versions of Day One 2.0)
    • More social media integrations and the ability to choose a start date for syncing to (back-filling dates)
    • Stop having to rely on IFTTT for various processes
    • Create integrations that eliminate the need for IFTTT
    • More thorough integration with iOS Health app
    • Better support for native documents (ie MS Word and MS Excel, CSV, and so on)
    • The ability to color-code entries for different purposes (like you would have for physical file-folders) – the coloration of an entry would go from bold on the left side of the entry and fade into either white or black
    • More granular color options for the different journals
    • A dedicated statistics function that showed many metrics of your journals (total number of words for a given period, for example)
    • A way for emails forwarded to journals to display as though from an email client
    • Make the iOS / iPad OS version match the Mac OS version for when mass-changing / editing places on entries

-A way to tap on / click on a photo and display not just date and time, but camera make and model used

    • Better interaction capabilities and responsive with Day One support teams
    • Have a “find and replace” capability
    • An ability to connect to different messaging systems, in order to import conversations from friends, colleagues, and loved ones
    • The ability to set a start date and end date for when a specific location holds a Custom Name (ie “Location A” is the custom name, and the dates are from 1/1/2019-12/1/2019; before and after that date range, the location would be the default street number and name
    • Have a way to designate the primary device for sync to work from, to which the other devices would sync
    • A methodology for how to properly archive and make public your journals after you have passed on from this life

One other feature which should be brought back:

The ability to custom-sort / organize your custom templates. It WAS a feature many years ago. It was never explained as to WHY that capability was removed.

  • Hi @canesshapes0u!

That’s a great list of requests, and I’ll forward this over to the team for future consideration! There are some great ones there!

@staff-reid Thank you! The custom templates sorting capability should never have been removed.
