Unable to rearrange journal order on android
-
I’m using Android and have multiple journals. I’m trying to change the order of the journals, but when I go into the list and click the edit and then try to drag them into the order I want them, it doesn’t drag. It simply doesn’t work. I’ve tried on two different Android devices with the same results.

Hi @exuberanthappily7d765ea8f7
To confirm what you’re seeing, you have multiple journals, you open the journal list, tap edit, then try to drag a journal to reorder it, and the drag doesn’t register at all, on two separate Android devices.
That’s not expected behavior. Reordering journals by drag should work once you’re in edit mode.
A couple of things that would help narrow this down:
- What Android version and Day One app version are you on for each of the two devices? (In Day One, go to Settings > About to find the app version.)
- Does the drag not respond at all, or does it start and then snap back?
-
My phones are running Android 17. My tablet is running Android 16. The day one app is 2026.17 (692). The drag handle does absolutely nothing. When I press on hold on the drag handle, all it does is put a check mark in the check box. That’s it. I have confirmed this on two separate Android phones and my Android tablet. Same behavior on all of them.

The drag handle appears to be working properly on my end. After I see the checkbox appear, I can drag and reorder journals in the Journals tab.
Please try the following:
- Close and re-open the app.
- Restart your device.

I seriously doubt that the device is the issue. I have installed this app on three separate Android devices and all three of them are behaving exactly the same way. The latest device I installed it on is the Pixel 10a that I just bought and it’s doing the same thing on this new device.

Thanks for bearing with us on this. A couple of us have tried to reproduce this on Android and haven’t been able to yet.
One thing worth ruling out first, because it matches your description closely. The drag handle only picks a journal up if your finger starts sliding straight away. If you press and hold it still, the app reads that as a long-press on the row and ticks the checkbox instead – and once that happens, that touch is spent, so nothing will drag until you lift your finger and press again. On our devices, pressing the handle and immediately sliding up or down does reorder the list.
Could you try it exactly that way:
- Tap Edit in the journal list.
- Touch the drag handle and slide up or down immediately, without resting on it first.
- Release where you want the journal to land.
If that reorders the list, great. If it still does nothing, that’s genuinely useful to know, and a short screen recording of the attempt would help us more than anything else at this point. It would show us the exact gesture and what the app does with it, which is the piece we’re missing. You can send that to us via https://dayone.me/support
Thanks!

That was exactly the problem. I’m used to other apps where you press and hold then drag, not press and drag real fast. Thanks for the information.
