+1 to this feature request. This is a much needed feature especially when writing long journal entries. Please add this feature to the mac os app asap.

  • Hi, @nilot27! I’ve added your vote for this feature request too. Thank you for sharing your feedback with us!

+1 please, I desperately need this!! I spent a lot of time jumping around between journalling apps before finally settling into Day One, but I’m used to writing in apps with typewriter mode and I find the lack of it profoundly uncomfortable. This is the one feature that Diarly has going for it that made me keep going back there for a while. I want to make it work in Day One but without typewriter mode I’m having a hard time. I made an account here just to add this vote. Please, please add typewriter mode 🙏🏻

  • Hi @rarepasta6325!

We got your vote added to the feature request! 😊

Hey @rarepasta6325 that app you mentioned, Diarly, looks great. It has typewritter mode and the highlighting options are amazing. What made you choose DayOne instead? I’ve been waiting for the DayOne team to add the tyepewritter mode for more than a year. Now I’m considering moving to another app.

@maptwp thanks for asking! Honestly it could’ve gone either way, but I went with Day One for several reasons, some of which are really down to very minute personal preferences:

    • I’m grandfathered into Day One’s legacy Plus plan which serves all my needs, so it helps me save on a subscription.
    • Day One web is really useful to me as sometimes I need to log in on a browser.
    • Personally I find the design more elegant than Diarly and the lack of formatting and design options a feature, not a bug. I was spending a lot of time in Diarly playing around with colours and fonts, whereas in Day One I open the app and write immediately.
    • This is a very niggly detail—but I prefer the way Day One handles tags, which is that I can tag the entry without having to type the hashtag inline. I don’t really want to see tags cluttering up my entries. In Diarly, the tags have to be typed in the entry, as far as I could tell.
    • By virtue of its popularity, Day One json files are almost universally accepted as an import option to many other apps, which gives me more confidence in data portability.

Your needs might differ though! I think Diarly has a trial period (and a free tier without multiple journals/sync) so you can give it a go and see how it works for you.

Wow @rarepasta6325, thanks a lot for the detailed review, this is really helpful. I also noticed Diarly doesn’t have a word count like DayOne, which is very important to me. But I love the completely clean interface in full-screen mode. I’m also grandfathered into DayOne, so not an easy decision to leave. I hope the guys at DayOne will implement this so-needed typewriter feature soon.

  • Hi @deathorplumbing!

I got your request added! 😊

I write my longer journal entries with iA Writer because of its typewriter and focus features, then I copy/paste into DayOne. It works but it would be nice to stay within DayOne.

  • Hi there, !@ralphmcd3 – thanks for your feedback about this! I’ve added your vote to the feature request.
