Tagging of People
-
Hey,
I often refer to friends and family in my notes and would like to link them and also search for entries where I refer to them.
I imagine that similar to to Tags, maybe distinguished by some icon that it is person. -
Were you thinking that this would be a separate feature from tags? Or more of an enhancement to the existing tags feature where you could designate a tag as a person tag? I’d love to hear more about your thoughts on this!

Hey @mikerockwell, I would probably see it as a separate feature that behaves a lot like tags. E.g. I would like to reference people in my entries as well as add/see them for each entry, and be able to see all people I ever mentioned and filter entries where a person was mentioned. At the same time, I would like it highlighted differently so it is easily distinguishable from tags.
Current workaround with only tags could be [#p_JohnSmith], but that’s hard to distinguish from all the other tags that are not persons and serve a very different purpose.
Does that make it clearer? How it’s implemented or included in the existing apps/UI is certainly up to you :D
While writing those down, same could also work well for locations, but that is an different topic.

Thanks for taking the time to share this detailed suggestion. I’ve added your idea to our list of feature requests for the team to review.

You could do that with tags and have a visual differentiation between person-tags and regular tags. In my favorite to-do app, 2Do, I use emojis in tags to categorize and set certain classes of tags off from others.
For example:
🤠-calamity-jane
🤠-wild-bill-hickock
-curly-joe-clanton
And even though the emoji is at the start of the tag name, you can still search tags based on text farther into the tag name, like “Hickok”.

I’m upvoting this as well. A dedicated “People” section would be a great addition.
At the moment I solve this using tags, so IF you decide to implement a people section then I would like an option to easily convert my “people tags” to names in said section. -
@primalisten Thank you for your vote! I can’t make any promises about timelines, but your feedback is noted.
In the meantime, the best workaround is to use tags with a consistent naming convention to represent people. A few approaches the community has found useful:
- A prefix like
#p_or#person_to distinguish people tags from other tags (e.g.,#p_JohnSmith) - An emoji prefix to make them visually pop in the tag list (e.g.,
👥 Wife) - Searching or filtering by that tag across all journals to pull up every entry mentioning that person
- A prefix like
