Sync issues after iCloud restore causing duplicate entries

Hi everyone, I’m running into a technical issue with Day One after restoring my journals via iCloud—since the restore, I’m seeing duplicate entries across multiple journals and occasional sync delays between my Mac video editor and iPhone even though both are on the latest version and signed into the same Apple ID; I’ve already tried toggling iCloud sync off/on, force-quitting the app, and rebuilding the journal database, but the duplicates still keep reappearing after sync completes—has anyone experienced this behavior before, and is there a recommended way to safely deduplicate entries or reset sync without risking data loss?

  • Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. A couple of quick questions to help us point you in the right direction:

    1. Which version of Day One are you using? You can check this on your iPhone by going to Settings (profile icon, top right) > About. If you’re on your Mac, go to Day One menu > About Day One. We’re looking for whether you’re using Day One Classic (version 1.x) or the current Day One app (version 2026.8).
    2. When you mention “iCloud sync,” do you mean iCloud was your sync method within the app, or did you restore your entire device from an iCloud backup? These are different things – iCloud sync was a feature in Day One Classic, while the current app uses Day One Sync (a separate service). An iCloud device restore is something else entirely.

Knowing this will help us figure out what caused the duplicates and the safest way to clean them up without risking any data.

In the meantime, you can check your data on the web at dayone.me – if you’re able to sign in there and see your journals, that confirms your entries are backed up on the Day One server regardless of what’s happening locally.
