Step count not showing in entry data
-
Just noticed today that step counts aren’t showing up in any of my entries, even old ones where the step count was definitely included before. It doesn’t appear to have been moved elsewhere (at least, not anywhere that’s intuitive to me). Hopefully this gets put back soon!

Hi there,
What’s happened is actually an intentional change. The step count option in entry metadata has been removed from Day One as of the recent app update (version 2026.9). This was a deliberate decision by the team, so it won’t be restored in its current form. The plan is to bring HealthKit integration back in an improved way through the Today tab in a future update – but for now, the step count field in entry metadata is no longer available. We’ve noted your feedback, though.
You can read more about what’s currently supported with Apple Health in Day One here: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/day-one-ios/apple-health-app-integration/

Huh. That’s interesting. When it returns, will that data be restored to the old entries? It was nice to have it on certain days, especially about traveling or exercising, so have it just drop off of old entries with no warning isn’t great.

Hi @heykellie
Potentially yes. The data hasn’t been deleted, it’s just not displayed any more. So if we do bring it back we can look at restoring that old data.
If you wanted to access it in the meantime, you could do a JSON export, and then search the export file for
userActivityandstepCount.Hope that helps!

It looks as if new entries (since the change) don’t capture the
stepCountany more. Older entries still have the data (and it shows up in a JSON export), but it isn’t being recorded in newer entries as of now.I’d be interested in seeing HealthKit info (or at least step counts) return in some future release. One limitation that bugged me slightly with the old implementation was that
stepCountwas always step count as of some specific time; if you checked the ‘all day’ checkbox on an entry, you didn’t get astepCount. So all my journal entries have an arbitrary time of 11:59, which feels a little odd. It’s not a big deal one way or another, but consider this my vote for supporting HealthKit integration that works in a sensible way with ‘all day’, and — ideally — a way to backfill HealthKit data to old entries if possible.
