I signed up for a WordPress account just to comment on this thread.. currently using apple journal and sometimes even good notes.. if DayOne could make a paper template.. thats not “Drawing” and also searchable.. with zoom.. Id make the complete swap to DayOne.. it’s 2026!!!! cmonnnnn

I’m back a little early for my annual bump on this feature request. My journal is getting bloated with PDFs imported from Goodnotes. C’mon gang, PLEASE add real Pencil support to Day One!

I’ve been using Dayone for so many years I can’t remember!!! Love the app and you have helped turn me into a journal enthusiast. Thank you for all your hard work.
I’m also, very much a +1 for handwriting my journals. I left Dayone because of it and would love to come back home.

Please add a request on my behalf, too! DayOne is my favorite journaling app and I have been a premium subscriber since 2011. I have always switched my daily journaling between paper notebooks and DayOne because there are times when I prefer to write by hand and times when I prefer typing; but, now owning an Apple Pencil and iPad, I would like the option of searchable, handwriting-to-text features similar to Apple Notes. Looking forward to seeing what DayOne brings to the table to compete with other journaling apps!

I absolutely agree! This would be an amazing app if you supported handwritten journals. Many people that like to use a journal like it because they can express themselves in handwriting. Many other apps offer this, but end to end encryption is very important for journaling. For years I have been looking for other apps because this one with its current drawing only functionality is just not what a person who journals needs.

I just got an Apple Pencil. With virtually every other app you get a small keyboard when you activate the pencil. It allows you to correct errors, backspace, or to be used as a typewriter. (It’s not the same as the main keyboard which shows up on the bottom when you want to use your finger to type.)
I can handwrite with my pencil in D1 and scribble turns it to text, which is what I want. But, if I want to add a return, go backward, make a correction, etc., I cannot do it as neither the small apple-pencil-specific keyboard shows up nor does the big one. I can touch the screen and bring up the big keyboard, but then, as soon as I use the pencil again, the keyboard disappears, unlike the mini-pencil-keyboard which stays visible until dismissed.
One of the biggest reasons I got the pencil was to write my journal entries and I cannot do that efficiently or effectively.
Am I doing something wrong? If so, please advise. Otherwise, please make the app act like every other app I have when I use the apple pencil.

On the feature request: full handwriting journaling with Apple Pencil is something the team already has on their radar. However, we don’t have a timeline to share for when or whether it will ship.
On the keyboard issue specifically: when you write into an entry with Scribble, you’re right that there’s no persistent mini toolbar with backspace, return, and undo, the way you’d get in Notes or GoodNotes. That’s not a setting you’re missing; it’s just not something Day One’s editor currently offers. For now, the workaround is to tap into the field to bring up the full keyboard for corrections, then switch back to the Pencil. Your feedback is noted, though.

Actually, your solution does not work. You can tap on the screen and bring up the keyboard, but the second you tap the pencil again, the keyboard goes away. In effect, it’s useless.
I have been with Day One a very long time. I am considering moving to Apple’s Journal as I really want to write with the pencil and, as I said, this is the only app that doesn’t support it – pretty sad for an app whose entire purpose is writing.
