Pencil support in iOS
-
I know this one’s been floating around for years, but I wanted to resurrect it. Please add full journaling support for the Apple Pencil on the iPad. As many people know, there’s a ton of research showing the benefits of handwritten journaling over typing and the current pencil support in Day One falls woefully short of a useful journaling experience. Importing PDF’s from Goodnotes/Notability/OneNote just doesn’t cut it. Please help! 😁

We support both Drawing and Scribble with the Apple Pencil on iPad: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/tips-and-tutorials/drawing-in-day-one-for-ios/
Can you let me know what else specifically you’d like to see added? I’d be happy to let the team know.

The current capability is geared more towards drawing and not writing. Once you’ve completed your entry, it’s basically stored as a picture. You cannot go back and edit it like you can in the popular note taking apps. Some basic stationery capability would be nice, too. Lined or dotted pages, for example. A real bonus would be the ability to create PDF templates, so we can use some of the available journaling or time management prompt sheets that are floating around the internet. Or perhaps answering the prompts in the current template format in pencil, rather than typing.
Pencil support on the iPad is good for as far as it goes. I’d just like it to go further. Some days i like to journal by typing but on others, I’d like to sit down and write longhand and it would be great if I could do both in Day One.

Hello @jtakatsuka!
I can definitely forward this feedback over to the team for future consideration.

I agree completely with this request. I enjoy using Day One with a keyboard and would also like to journal with the pencil as described by @jtakatsuka.

I have been Day One premium user for many years now, but unless pencil support is added soon, I’m thinking to move to something like Apple Journal. Will the ability to use an Apple Pencil to hand write within Day One be added soon? I have the latest version but cannot access the “draw” feature that is being spoken about.

Hi @7bcwzq9856
I’ve added a vote for this request on your behalf.
Can you tell us a little more about what you’re experiencing when trying to access the drawing tool?

This would be great to see in terms of e-ink devices as well! I use two Boox e-ink devices for note-taking and have been using Day One on them as well, using the handwriting keyboard which converts handwriting to text. Actually being able to just straight up write in the journal would be great.

I can only agree…
Today, I write my handwritten posts in Apple Notes and share them as PDFs to Day One.
It’s better than nothing, but it would be much smoother if writing tools and paper types (lined, etc.) were directly integrated into Day One…

Thanks @cynthiafcw and @rpirquetcd88d7f4cc – I’ve forwarded your feedback as feature requests for Handwriting OCR support.

+1 for me as well. I’m actually surprised this isn’t already a feature in Day One. I’d love to be able to create a new entry and use the whole page to write my entry, with the option of ruled lines (as mentioned above).
A nice next step would be handwriting recognition, but I’d settle for basic handwriting functionality first 🙂

Time for the annual bump on this request, and this time I hope there’s additional motivation 😁. iOS 26 will bring the Journal app to the iPad and Mac, including pencil support on the iPad. I’m very attached to DayOne and don’t see myself transitioning over…except for that pencil support. I’ll definitely be experimenting with my personal journaling practice to use the Journal app for handwriting and DayOne for everything else.
Pretty please, consider upping the priority for pencil support in DayOne?

Thanks for writing in again, @jtakatsuka! I’ve made sure to add your newest comments to our report.

+1 from me. I would very much want to option to have the full pencil and handwriting support on iPad including search, edit, spell check etc..

Another +1 from me. Being able to handwrite my Journal through Day One would be awesome.
