Feature Request: Read-capable API for AI assistant integration

I’m a long-time Premium subscriber with 4 active journals with tons of photos and more than 3000 entries. The new Zapier integration is a welcome step, but it only covers write access.

What’s missing is read access, the ability for AI assistants like Claude to query journal entries. The use case is simple: “Find entries where I was working through a creative block.” Right now that’s impossible without a manual export.

A read-capable API would make Day One a living, queryable knowledge base not just a write-only archive. AI connector frameworks like Anthropic’s MCP are ready and waiting. Day One would be one of the most meaningful integrations possible.

Please consider this a separate and distinct request from write automation. The value is entirely different.

  • I have some good news: Day One already has a local MCP Server feature on Mac. You can enable it in the Mac app under Settings > Labs (“Mac CLI MCP Server”), then launch it from Terminal using the “dayone mcp” command. Once it is running, AI assistants like Claude can connect to it and query your journal entries directly. Because it runs locally on your Mac, your data never leaves your device.
