Export doesn’t work

On web, try to export to json.

Popup: include media. Two options: include media, export without media. Media’s not there, it’s on my phone. ok.

Select “export without media”. Popup appears showing default filename and location. Click Save.

Nothing is exported. Zipfile is “created” but it is empty. And you just keep coming back to this same stupid “include media” popup.

What is so hard about this???

I think I read it is a known issue and the devs are looking into it.

“looking into it” for a long time for something so fundamentally broken.

What version of 2026.5 or 2026.5.1? That update fixed the problem of blank output to exported files (in some cases, anyway).

I am having empty ZIP files also. I am using Version: 2026.7.2.

Fortunately, export works on my Android app Version 2026.6.3 (640)

  • I’ve tested this with version 2026.7.3 of the web app and the zip exported without issues and was not empty. Do you still get the same issue with 2026.7.3?

If so, does it make a difference if you include or exclude media in the export?

    Hi Staff Donnie,

Same issue here. Android user on a Samsung. Tried it multiple times and the app tells me the backup was succesful (blue banner on the bottom of the screen) but no pop-up appears to ask where I’d like to store it. I have checked Samsung folder, Google Drive on 2 different accounts and can’t find anything. Same for PDF export. Also on the web based it tells me that one journal is not found and indeed I’m missing lots of data. I don’t want to start fiddling with this before I have a good backup. Can you help me out?

This is a known bug in the Day One web app that our engineering team is actively investigating. The zip file can come out empty or corrupted. We don’t have a fix deployed yet, but I have flagged your report.

We’ll update this thread when the web export fix is confirmed.

    @franklinholvoet

For the missing file: Check your device’s Downloads folder first — on Samsung devices the file sometimes saves there automatically. Also try Internal Storage → Day One, or search for .zip files by date in My Files.

For the missing journal data on web:

    1. On your phone, go to Settings → Sync and confirm sync is complete
    2. If entries are still missing on the web but visible in the app, check if the encryption key is present
