Export

Is it possible to select individual journals to export? I am keen to try to get a PDF file of a single journal so I can then convert it into something editable to check page breaks, layouts, etc and then finally printing it.
I seem to export all my journals as a single file which is huge so no apps will work on it. -
You don’t indicate which environment you’re working in (macOS, iOS, iPadOS, web, Android). The exact steps differ slightly for each environment given the different screens.
Here are the steps to export a single journal to PDF in the macOS environment. I use these steps daily, although I’m exporting to JSON and for purposes of backing up my data locally.
- From the main menu, click the command View > Show Journals.
- In the journals list that is displayed, click the one journal you wish to export.
- Click the menu command View > Timeline.
- In the Timeline view, select all of the journal entries with the keyboard shortcut ⌘+A.
- Right-click any one of the selected entries to display the context menu.
- From the context menu, choose Export > PDF.
If you don’t want to export all of the entries in that journal, you can select a sub-set of the total journal entries. One way is to use the search function and press Enter when the result is displayed. Just that sub-set will be exported. Similarly, you can manually choose entries by click entries with the ⌘ button depressed (i.e., multi-select).
I don’t have a Android Device myself, but I’ve heard that there is no equivalent in the Android version of Day One to selecting all entries in a journal with ⌘+A.

Thanks – my environment is Mac-based so your instructions were perfect. Many thanks for taking the trouble to reply.

More than happy to help. Your comments are gratifying.
Please do double-check the PDF file you exported, though. Posts in this discussion page suggest there are problems exporting to PDF. Specifically, the pages are all devoid of entries’ text.

Also, if you haven’t done so already, apply the 2026.5.1 update for Day One. It seems to have fixed the PDF export issue.

@ashmarston Yes, 2026.5.1 includes the fix for the PDF export issue, as mentioned here.
Thanks again @stevekoterski!
