Changing location via Google Maps

  • I am trying to change the location of an entry using Google Maps, because the built-in map (uses Apple Maps?) does not contain a good searchable database of places (restaurants, etc), and I can’t find locations that I do find on Google Maps. I also have not been able to manually drop a pin in Day One’s map — on iOS and on Mac.

When I right click on the entry’s location there is an option to Open in Google Maps. What is this for if I can’t use it to drop a pin/location for the Day One entry?

Is there any way to use Google Maps, or manually drop a pin/location? Thanks.

  • Hello @abaday,

Thanks for reaching out! Day One uses Apple Maps for location information. This cannot be changed to Google Maps at this time. I would be happy to submit a feature request for future consideration to allow this.

When I right click on the entry’s location there is an option to Open in Google Maps.

This simply opens the location in Google Maps, should you want to use Google Maps to get to that location.

Is there any way to use Google Maps, or manually drop a pin/location?

You can drop pins on Mac by doing the following:

Mac: Click on entry > Click on recorded location > Change Location > Right-click on the map on the location you wish to use > Use Location

This should then drop the pin on that location. You should also be able to search for locations in the search bar when editing the location. Is there a specific place that is not populating for you?

The process is similar on iOS.

iOS: Tap entry > Tap recorded location > Edit Location > on the map long press on the location where you wish to drop the pin

    Hopefully that helps!

  • Thanks Reid. That’s now very clear.

The drawback with the default map (Apple Map I guess) is that it doesn’t seem to have as extensive a database of places as Google Maps does. So, if you search for a restaurant, you find it on GMaps but not in Apple Maps. That’s fine though — manual locations is good enough.

  • You’re very welcome. I did submit a feature request on your behalf to support Google Maps and allow you to choose which service to use.
