Annotation mode for old journal entries

I’d love something similar to the annotation/comment systems in apps like Adobe Acrobat or Kindle. I don’t necessarily want to rewrite the original entry — I just want to add new thoughts, reflections, reactions, so I hope a new time record would also be generated for those reviews.

It could even be interesting if shared entries allowed friends to leave annotations/comments as well. I think this would make journaling feel much more layered and alive, instead of entries becoming “frozen” after they’re written.

  • Hi there,

Just to make sure I understand what you’re envisioning: a dedicated annotation or review mode where you could layer new thoughts on top of an existing entry — without altering the original — and where each annotation would carry its own timestamp. Plus the optional social dimension: letting trusted people leave their own annotations on shared entries.

That’s not something Day One currently offers. The closest existing feature is the ability to add comments in Shared Journals, which lets collaborators respond to entries in a separate thread.

In the meantime, a workaround you can try is to create a follow-up entry that links back to the original. Please take a look at this support page, as it will give you the step-by-step instructions: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/tips-and-tutorials/linking-journal-entries/

Thanks again for the thoughtful suggestion. Your feature request is noted.
