Add ‘people’ category for entries

Right now, I find that Day One already categorises memories through things like time, location, activities, and music. But one thing that feels missing is people. Even the original iPhone Photos app already supports organising memories by people, and honestly, it becomes incredibly useful over time.

A huge part of my memories is going outside with friends. Sometimes I want to look back at all the moments I shared with a specific person — trips, meals, conversations, events, etc. It would be amazing to:

    • grouping memories by the person who accompanied with me
    • having a dedicated icon/avatar for each person
  • Unknown's avatar

As a person who follows the GTD method for managing tasks and projects—including people, also called agendas—I do much of what you say with tags that have a combination of emoji and text. For example:

    • 👥 Meeting
    • 🧑🏻 Wife

I define one distinct tag for each person (by name if not by distinct avatar). This allows me to filter entries in a single journal or across all entries to show just the entries associated with that person. This works for me and is functionality that exists now in Day One.

You’d probably need to submit a feature request for the new functionality that you envision, though.

    • A distinct type of marker (i.e., persons)
    • A menu command for filtering on persons
    • Perhaps a dialog for managing these tag-like markers (ala the dialog for templates)
    • The ability to specify/define a unique avatar for each person marker

This has been requested several times before, and I still second the request.
Please add a dedicated People section.

Using tags as suggested by frowningsteve is a temporary solution which works pretty well. Still though, I don’t want a big mix of tags where about a thousand of them are peoples names.
I want people in a neatly organised section of its own.

I also think it could evolve beyond simple tagging:

    • relationship timelines
    • shared places/events
    • “memories with this person” view
  • Unknown's avatar

I feel highly needed — a flexible category system.

Although changing the underlying framework may be a much larger long-term challenge, I think a dedicated “People” feature would be especially meaningful for ESFP users like me.
