Active journal is losing its selection indicator (highlighted background)

Sometimes when I switch apps on Mac OS and return to Day One, I have no idea which journal I’m in. I have to read previous entries on the list to figure out which journal I’m in. Sometimes the active journal is marked, but very often the mark is lost. It’s possible this is a bug and should be fixed. Or maybe I’m missing something or overlooking something. Permanently marking the active journal would significantly improve the experience when working with multiple journals.

I updated to version 2026.13. Unfortunately, the problem still persists. The easiest way to reproduce it is to restart the app. When the app starts, the notebook is not selected, even though it has an open note from that notebook. I can’t attach a screenshot here, but here is a link to the screenshot.

You’ve hit on a known bug. On macOS, Day One sometimes fails to keep the active journal highlighted in the sidebar after the app loses focus or restarts. You’re not missing anything, the selection indicator just doesn’t always restore correctly.
As a workaround in the meantime, the journal name shown at the bottom of the entry editor always reflects which journal the current entry belongs to, so that can help you orient yourself when the sidebar highlight is missing.
Our team has this logged. While I can’t share a timeline for a fix, I have added your report, including the 2026.13 confirmation and the restart repro steps you described.
