“Your login has expired. Please sign in again.” error won’t go away!
-
I’m a Plus user; I’ve purchased the app before subscriptions began. I’ve just opened the app for the first time in about three months, and was greeted (on the Mac) with this notice. No matter how many times I log out, and then log in, it continues.
Another issue is that the app is telling me “Enter Encryption Key.” An error in the settings says “There was an error retrieving your encryption key.” None of my journals are set to use encryption, and I’m unaware of ever having such a key.
I think something may have changed with syncing. I was using Dropbox, and I think it has now been automatically changed. Fine with me, but I’d like the error messages to go away!
Both my Mac and my iPhone show sync errors, but actually everything seems to be syncing fine. Is this happening to all the legacy users? I’d love any help with this! Thanks.

@a2a803360c5ed9b This isn’t a widespread issue for Plus users, so let’s see what might be happening in your case.
Without sharing the key with us, is the encryption key present on any device in the following places?
- iOS: Day One > Settings > Sync > Encryption Key
- Mac: Day One > Settings > Sync > Advanced > View Encryption Key
- Android: Day One > Settings > Sync > Encryption Key
- Web: Day One > Settings > Account > Encryption Key

Thank you for the reply!
No Encryption Key present, but says “Enter Encryption Key” instead.

Hi @a2a803360c5ed9b,
Would you have saved the PDF of the encryption key from a previous device?
We do have steps to get a new key here: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/troubleshooting/getting-a-new-encryption-key/. These steps will resolve the issue.
Also, we are also working on a fix for the encryption error appearing when there are not any encrypted journals on the account. That will be available in version 2024.11 (our next update). -
No key, and I’ve searched for it. Don’t remember ever having one, but searched anyway. None.
I’ll follow the link to get a new key. Thank you! I’ll post how it goes when I’m done.

Just one more thing…
My account is not a subscription account since I bought the app before subscriptions. If I delete the account and make a new one, will it still be a free account without a subscription? I DO NOT want to end up having to subscribe from doing this!
Thanks again.

Hi @a2a803360c5ed9b, Great questions!
My account is not a subscription account since I bought the app before subscriptions.
It sounds like you may have the Plus account status, is that correct? If so, this status is based on the Apple ID used to buy Day One 2.0 before we changed to a subscription. As long as you are using the same Apple ID on the App Store, your account status will remain Plus even after getting a new account to resolve the encryption key issue.
If you do not see Plus as the account status after creating the new account, try these steps to restore purchases: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/troubleshooting/i-am-supposed-to-be-plus-why-did-i-lose-my-features/
Let us know if that helps or if we can assist you further.

All fixed!
In the process of syncing the app on my family members’ phones, I uncovered one version that still had the key! I added that to other other devices, and backed up a pdf copy.
Suddenly, all errors went away, and everything is great.
Thank you for your help, and producing such a wonderful app!

@a2a803360c5ed9b, that’s great! I’m glad you were able to find a device that included the key!
