Why isn’t DayOne for Mac using attached photos’ EXIF or Metadata?
-
Often I’ll take photos of stuff. Then later at home I’ll create entries and use those photos in the DayOne app for Mac.
I’ve noticed that DayOne isn’t importing location or time based on the images. Why is this?
The images are taken using the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Hi Martin!
If you open Photos > Settings > General, is the option to share location information enabled?

Let us know if that helps or if we can assist you further.

Yes, that is enabled. But I’m talking about photos taken with the iPhone and later on, when at home, I add those photos to the Mac version of DayOne through the Mac’s Photos app.
Is there a setting in the iPhone that I should be looking at?
Thanks

Hi Martin,
For images where location isn’t being passed to Day One, can you right-click on the image and confirm that there is a location associated with it?
If there is a location associated with the image, could you try quitting and reopening Photos to see if the problem persists?
If you’re still unable to get location information shared alongside the image at that point, could you share with us the exact steps you’re taking in the Photos app to share them to Day One? That will help us in our testing on our end.

I’ll create a new entry in DayOne.
I’ll then click on the paperclip icon and either add media from today or browse files. From there I’ll click on “Photos” in the FInder sidebar then browse the photos in the Photos app, select the photo and then add it to the DayOne entry.
I just tested it now using a photo from 3 weeks ago and in a place 100 miles away. It worked properly.
Other times I would add a photo using the same method/process and it wouldn’t ask me to update the entry based on photo info. I’d have to do it manually (edit time/date) and search the map for the location. And often that doesn’t work.
And I still have a lot of problems with the iPhone app and location data. It will show an approximate location in the entry but when I edit it and change it to something else it won’t retain that new location information. Rather, it reverts to the original one. Happens a lot and it becomes somewhat tiresome.
Eg: I’m at Joe’s Hardware but the location shown in the entry will display Fred’s BBQs which is a store nearby. I change it to Joe’s Hardware but when I save it it’s reverted back to Fred’s BBQs. -
Hi @marts57

When this happens, is the photo timestamp within 1 hour of the entry date/time? If the photo metadata is within 1 hour of the entry date/time, then it should be updating the entry automatically.
And I still have a lot of problems with the iPhone app and location data. I will email you to get more information about this issue. Please let us know if you do not receive it.
