Where did my entry go?
-
I made an entry on my phone. Saved, went to computer, wrote more. SAVED. Now I go back to my phone, guess what, everything I wrote on my computer is GONE. Where is it? This is pathetic.

No reply. Actively looking for an alternative to Day One. This is the second time this has happened and it’s garbage and inexcusable.

Don’t raise the white towel just yet. Don’t raise the flag. It could just be that the synchronization of the new data that you added on the “computer” just hadn’t had a chance to propagate to your “Phone”.
Do you see these changes made on your computer today, the 26th? It’s now two days later than the initial problem. If you still don’t see the newer data…
Visualize this arrangement. Your data exists in three places: on your phone, on your computer, and on the Day One servers. Here are the steps that take place behind the scenes:
- You create the entry on your phone.
- The data synchronizes from your phone to the Day One servers.
- The data synchronizes from the servers to your computer.
- You modify the journal entry on the computer.
- The entry goes back the other way: computer to Day One servers to your phone.
It sounds to me like that last step was interrupted and the changes you made on the computer never successfully migrated to the server and from thence to your phone. I’m not sure what you meant by “Save” as there’s no save process in Day One (look on the File menu). The entry automatically synchronizes.
In the native macOS app, there is a way to manually initiate a synchronization. Look in the Settings dialog, on the Sync tab. You should see a Sync Now button. Also on that tab, you will see the date and time of the last synchronization.
There are a few facts that you can provide to make it easier for others to better help with your problem:
- What phone are you using, IOS or …?
- What computer are you using? A Mac (in which case you’re probably using the Day One native macOS app)? Or a PC (in which case you’re using the Day One web app)?

I’ve worked in tech for quite a while, I understand the concept of data syncing, trust me on that. It ain’t there. I’m using the android app and the web app on windows 11. No save? Okay, if you want to say so, but there is an icon that indicates SOMETHING, and if that something isn’t “successfully synced to server” then what is it? A cruel and pointless lie?
This is a case of an app having one job to do and failing to do it. Still actively looking for a replacement.

Hi @lilbrownbat,
We’ve reached out via the email associated with your forum profile with a subject “Day One Sync Overwrite” on last Friday, August 29th. Would you check your inbox again, including spam?

Hello there,
Thanks for reaching out to us in the forums!
The issues you’re seeing with the app overwriting data is not expected and we’d like to help you look further into this.
Can you explain your workflow to us in detail?
I understand you’re using the Android app and dayone.me.
Are they being used at the same time?
Is the Entry being opened and viewed on Android and at dayone.me at the same time?
Does the sync overwrite happen only when using one version of the app or does it happen when you use both?—
We’ll be on the lookout for the reply to our email!
