Weather is not updating for older dates
-
The weather function is now setting itself to the note’s creation date and location, but not updating for older dates. I previously had no problem creating notes that had dates 10+ years ago and weather data getting updated; however, now it never seems to update or change. This is consistent behaviour across all iOS or Mac devices (everything is completely up to date).

Hello,
Thank you for bringing this problem to our attention. We are working on resolving this as soon as possible.
-
I have this exact problem I can’t add weather from 2019 in my journal entry that is from 2019
-
Thanks, @stormy106. We found that Apple’s WeatherKit only provides data back to Aug 1, 2021, but we are looking into some solutions.

Hi @staff-james staff-shelley – Any updates on this issue? I’m still experiencing this problem as I’m transferring older entries from a manual journal into Day One. I’m wondering if I should stop the transfer until the problem is resolved, as I suspect that once it is resolved the app won’t go back and auto update older entries.
Any guidance at this point is appreciated.

@tinkerthoughtsblue Thanks for reaching out. Our team did some more digging and it appears Apple’s Weather API, that we use, only goes back to August 1, 2021. So if entries are being created past that date then weather will not be added to those entries.

Hi @staff-reid and @staff-james. Did DayOne change the source of weather data, then? Because before we were able to add entries with dates older than August 1, 2021 and we would get weather information for those. Is this a feature we have lost at some update?
I have several old entries I uploaded from old journals, they have weather data, but I still needed to work on them, and now once I do and update them to their precise time they will lose that…

@leterra23 We used the Dark Sky API. Apple bought them out, and now we use the Apple Weather API, as the Dark Sky API is no longer available. Apple Weather currently only supports back to August 1, 2021. Hopefully it will support further dates in the future.

Hi @jrileyjohnson,
The cause of this issue is due to the limitation from Apple’s end–they only support weather data back to August 1, 2021. We hope that’ll change, but at the moment, it’s limited by Apple’s limitation. I hope that clarifies things.

Instead of hoping that Apple change their weather API, can a feature be added to DayOne to manually add temperatures to diary entries?
-
-
Raising this as a feature request would be appreciated and I’m sure other people would find this feature beneficial.
-
Hi @cohen2501 – thanks for your feedback! I’ve added your feedback to our feature request.
-
Hello, does the Day One development team have a timeline for when this feature will be added to a future release?
-
Hello @cohen2501!
We don’t have a timeline for this at this time. As we are using Apple’s Weather API they would need to make changes to allow weather data to be back dated further than they do at this time.
-
The weather API doesn’t need to change if people can manually edit the weather data.
People can manually change the date and time of an entry so the same functionality should be available for the weather data.
-
Understood. Manually updating the weather is not something that has been put into development yet but we have logged all requests above.

Hello, does the Day One development team have a timeline for when this feature (manually editing the weather data) will be added to a future release?
BTW as Apple has their own journaling app, there is not financial incentive for them to change the weather API for the benefit of a competitors products.
