Unencrypted E2EE Journal on Local

    Hello,

I have an e2ee enabled journal. As DayOne documentation pointed here, I found my journal data as in sqlite file format. I opened the file using a regular sql editor, I found all of my entries in unencrypted.

After looking around a little bit, I found Neil’s blog post about querying DayOne local database. I asked him about this issue and he published a new article about that.

That means someone with some curiosity can read our journal. Is it normal that it is not encrypted for an e2ee journal?

    Thanks for the responses.

Hello @baybatu! Thanks for reaching out and sharing that article.

Day One stores data locally on each device and, if Sync is enabled, on Day One Sync servers.

End-to-end encryption is specific for the data uploaded to and stored on the Day One Sync servers. The data is protected by a unique, private key held only by the users.

For local encryption options, we rely on system options. On iOS and Android, those are encrypted by the Operating System. For Day One on macOS, users can encrypt the hard drive using File Vault. If you are using a shared computer, we recommend setting up individual user accounts in System Preferences.
