Unable to export JSON file

Have tried tens of times to export JSON zip file (with media) for two of my journals without any luck. The ‘Exporting Entries and Media’ box pops up, the loading circle (slowly) completes and then the app either shuts down, it just goes back to the Import/Export page without giving me further options of where to export, or I get an ‘Export failed’ notice. I have successfully exported a JSON zip file (w media) for one of my three journals, it is the smallest of the three, but these two are not working. On an iPhone, iOS 17.7, . Day One version 2024.20 (2542). I do have the Sync feature on of there’s a way to download the file from iCloud. The goal is to get the files saved so that I can delete the journals off my phone to fee up space on my phone. The content is pretty precious, wanting to make sure I do it correctly. Thanks so much for feedback and help!

  • Hello @jmorelen!

Is the media already downloaded to your device, or is the app trying to download it when exporting the JSON?

Can you check your media and choose to have it downloaded before exporting the JSON?

Day One > Settings > Sync > Storage > Select Download All Media

Give that a go and let us know if that helps.

Yes, they are all downloaded to my device. Double checked the settings you listed to confirm. That’s part of why I’m trying to effectively export – they’re taking up too much space on my device. Is there further advice? Are they syncing to a Day One server somewhere they might be pulled from and sent to me as a file? Thank you for your help.

  • Hi @jmorelen,

Here are a few steps that might help:

    1. It appears you’re using Day One version 2024.20. We’ve released several updates since then, including version 2024.24.1, which might address the bug causing the export failures. Please update your Day One app to the latest version and try exporting again.
    2. Instead of exporting all your entries, consider using Day One’s built-in features to optimize storage on your device.
    3. For temporary access, consider using the Day One web app (https://dayone.me/). While it doesn’t offer all the features of the iOS app, it might be a good solution to view your journals on any browser and free up space on your phone.
