The Worst Update: Layout Issues and Camera Feature Fixes Needed
-
The layout changes in version 2025.1.1 (2571) are absolutely terrible. I often write diary entries discreetly when there are people around, so I use a dark gray theme to avoid drawing attention. But in dark mode, the background is black, and the cursor is so close to black that it’s almost invisible, making it incredibly frustrating to write. If I change the theme to a lighter color to fix this, the new update makes the entire top section, including the status bar, the same bright theme color, which stands out way too much. It’s distracting and makes me uncomfortable.
This needs to be fixed. Either revert the layout changes in this version, restore the top section’s color to the way it was before, or better yet, make the cursor color brighter or give users the option to change it. This is something that needs urgent attention.
On top of that, there’s another issue I’ve been raising since 2019, but you’ve consistently brushed it off with a dismissive attitude, saying things like, “Why do you even need this?” and never addressing it. It’s about the landscape aspect ratio in the in-app camera. I don’t want to use the outdated square aspect ratio that not even Instagram uses anymore. And when I ask for it to be fixed, all I get is the same dismissive response: “Why use this camera? Just use the iPhone’s default camera.”
I’m not asking for a new feature here. I’m asking you to remove the square mode you created and change it to the standard landscape mode. This is basic functionality, and it’s ridiculous that it hasn’t been fixed. As someone who has been paying for the premium version of this app for years, I expect better. I frequently write diary entries and take photos, and switching between the app and the default camera to import photos is a hassle. No other diary app stubbornly insists on using a square mode for years like yours does. It’s absurd and completely unnecessary.
This isn’t just my opinion either. It’s a common complaint in communities in my country. You might not realize it, but a lot of users are fed up with your refusal to fix this camera issue in every single update. It’s long overdue, and it needs to change.

I’m sorry to hear about your experience.
Are you using Android, iPhone, or MacOS desktop app?
If you’re using the Android app, we recently pushed a fix to the cursor issue on 2025.2. If you haven’t already done so, please update to the latest version of the app.
As for the aspect ratio of the in-app camera, I have forwarded your feedback to our development team.
Thank you for your feedback!

I am an iPhone user. And this issue is only happening on iPhone. Has the iPhone update been completed? Are you waiting for Apple to approve it? If not, please let me know when it will be fixed.
And don’t just give a vague and formal answer to the in-app camera issue. Really convey it strongly. It’s a feature that only your company’s app doesn’t have.

Are you still using version 2025.1.1? Day One iOS 2025.3 started a phased release 3 days ago, so I recommend updating to the latest version if you haven’t already.
As mentioned before, your feedback on the in-app camera has been forwarded to our development team. We consider feature requests for each release based on the number of requests received, and we’re actively working on improving the app with every update.

The version of Day one app on my iOS is 2025.3 (2580). However, it is not resolved and the cursor is still dark in the dark color theme. If it is still the same in this version, is it hopeless? Or is there a way to do it somewhere in the settings?

@brnzkimb527d78b3b This bug was specifically happening on our Android version. This is not a bug but using the color of the journal selected. I’ve forwarded this over to the Apple team, and they are looking into adjustments for this “charcoal” journal color so it will be more visible.

@brnzkimb527d78b3b The cursor should be more visible in version 2025.5.
Please keep us posted after that update if you’re still having issues with that.
