The Neglected MacOS app
-
I’m curious why the MacOS version of Day One doesn’t have some of those found on the iPad, or even the web app. Here’s what I see missing…
- No control for dark or light mode in the app. With other apps, including apps like Diarly being able to control this, we know it’s possible.
- Lack of custom fonts. iPadOS has 19 built in apps, with the option of choosing a custom font as well. MacOS has just 17 with no option to choose another.
- No integration support. In order for me to link my Instagram account, I had to do so on the iPad. Heck, even the web app can handle that.
- No focus mode. I’m rather surprised to see the web version have this, but not the actual MacOS. I can understand not having it on iPad since minimizing the sidebar succeeds in providing a focus mode, but again, not MacOS.
Add to this, basic functionality other apps provide that Day One does not; paragraph spacing & image resizing are the two that I would really love to see. Even if we aren’t given the option to customize space between paragraphs, just build it in by default so we don’t need double-returns like we’re typing on an old-fashioned typewriter. Even this forum has it by default — why not your own app?
So many call Day One the gold standard when it comes to journaling apps, but it would be great to still see active development.

Hello @csnyder1582,
Our team has been working on a lot of things lately. Now that some of those projects have wrapped up, we do plan to spend a lot more time working on the Mac app. Day One on Mac is still a priority for us, and the overall goal is to have feature parity between platforms. This will take some time, but that is the goal.

These features have never been supported in Day One, but I’d be happy to submit a feature request on your behalf.

Thank goodness the macOS is about to get some attention! While I use the phone app multiple times a day, I also use the Mac app every day and MUST have it for my huge, multi-year project I’ve been working on since 2018: adding pre-Day One journaling and other content to my journal. I’m basically stretching my streak at both ends, though I do have content in my Day One journal for every year since 1971 (the year I was born) and even a few older years than that. My streak only goes back to October 2017 so far though.
My top request for the macOS is easier jumping from any date to any other date.

Thanks, @rhicarian!

Do you use the Calendar view mostly? Is that where you would like to see improvements in moving between dates?
