Template Entry does not save

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve just started using Templates on macOS. When I create a new entry from a template, the entry is created but does not sync or save. When I next open Day One the entry is gone, and it has not synced to the online or iOS journals.

I’ve recreated this issue several times, by creating an entry via one of two templates, then quitting and relaunching Day One.

Manual entries are saved and synced. This seems to only happen to new entries created via template.

Maybe I’m missing something easy here, or this is a bug. I’m running Day One version 2023.17 (1503) on macOS Ventura 13.5.

Hmmm that does sound like a frustrating situation. What is in your template (if you don’t mind sharing)? Is it one provided by Day One or is it one you made? Also, did you copy/paste anything into the template. I’m guessing something got into the editor that it’s choking on.

If you don’t mind, you could send us the crash securely via our Premium support.

To access Premium support, go to Day One on iOS/Android > Settings > Support > Contact Support to start an email with the default mail client.

Please include the following if possible:

@staff-d1greg – Thanks for the reply! It is indeed frustrating.

My issue has occurred on macOS. I hadn’t even tried on iOS! I just did so, and the template entry does save and sync from there. However, the very same template entry does not save and sync when created on macOS (I just tried again).

It’s a pretty simple entry, just four words and three tags, posted to one journal (it’s logging taking medicine). There are two very similar entries. I made them myself. I don’t think I copy/pasted, but if I did it was simple text.

To clarify, this isn’t a crash (at least where the app has crashed). The app stays running, just never syncs or saves the entry

I don’t have Premium Support in macOS (though I do seem to see a flash of a support button). I have a grandfathered Plus account.

I do see the Contact Support option in iOS. But again, my issue doesn’t seem to occur on iOS.

    What do you advise?

@devynosborne OK that’s some good information. Perhaps the quickest way to fix your issue is to re-make the template, clearing its formatting (and any invisible stuff that may be causing the problem).

    1. Go to this page that I made and paste the template content into it: https://codepen.io/justgage/full/dywXXex (This will strip the formatting and images and leave just result in plain text)
    2. Copy this content into a new template in Day One Mac (or iOS if you want)
    3. Add the tags manually by typing them
    4. Delete the old template

Naturally, this won’t fix the old entries, but you could copy/paste those into the page linked above and then paste them back into the editor to see if that fixes the issue. (Note that images or other things will not be preserved if you do that.)

Also, if you could provide me with the entry ID of an entry that doesn’t sync, I might be able to see if there’s anything weird in the code. Here’s how to do that: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/troubleshooting/locating-an-entry-id/

    Hopefully that helps 🙂

@staff-d1greg – Thanks! I finally had a moment to return to this.

I created new templates per your instructions on macOS. Unfortunately, that did not help. The new entries did not save or sync.

Here are two entry IDs for two new entries. I created these each from a new template (there are two templates, this is one of each). They did not sync. When I quit and relaunched Day One on macOS, they were gone. I don’t know if you’ll even see this entry.

    dayone://view?entryId=670760F338054E939C4ADDA8D249BD19

Here are two more. I just created this in the same way, but have not quit Day One yet. I’ll try to leave the app running to allow you a chance to see it.

Oddly, I note that the Template Settings box shows a count of zero for each template, even though I just created one of each.

FWIW, I have been creating manual entries every day the past week, with no issues.

    What do you think?

Hi @devynosborne, thanks for following up. Are the template entries on Mac being created in the menu bar?

It would be useful to get a screen recording of this happening. Please follow the steps in this guide below:

No, they are not created in the menu bar (which I separately discovered doesn’t sync until the app is opened).

These entries are being created in the macOS app itself: File > New From Template.

After my last post and with the app left open, I finally had to quit the app that evening. That’s when I discovered that the new entries had synced to the iOS app. When I relaunched the app, they were still there!

Just now, I created a new entry, manually synced (File > Sync Now), quit the app, relaunched and… the new one is gone.

So I don’t know. Something happened the other day, in the hours I left the app open, that seemed to allow it to save and sync. But when I try to save and sync quickly, entries disappear.

(Side note: I’m not getting email notifications of replies here. I’m just checking the thread manually.)

@staff-james – see my reply above. I forgot to tag you.

Hi @devynosborne! I have been having trouble reproducing this. I emailed you. Let us know if you did not receive it.
