Tag Management

I would like to see a separate entry in settings for managing tags (add, change, delete). I’d also like the ability to sort tags alphabetically. There is no ability to order them currently, which can be a bit of a pain. Thanks.

  • Hello there,

These are great suggestions. I’d be happy to forward this to the team for future consideration.

To piggyback upon this topic, having the ability to delete a tag from a central location (and have it be removed from all posts) would be super-helpful. My tags list was severely-polluted by the following Day One behavior: although I have “Create Tags from Hashtags” unchecked, Day One would still create tags whenever entries were imported from Instagram. Once I turned on that integration, I was inundated with over 800+ tag definitions I didn’t want.

  • @mcgaritydotme Thanks for your feedback on centralized tag management.

The “Create Tags from Hashtags” setting should prevent tags from being automatically created during import, even from Instagram. Can you see if you have this option disabled at https://dayone.me/settings?

To address your specific situation, try unlinking your Instagram account from Day One and reconnect it while ensuring the “Create Tags from Hashtags” option remains disabled. Please note that this will also create a new Instagram journal and require re-importing your data.

@staff-frank I no longer have Instagram setup, so I cannot test that currently. At the time I did, this is not how the “Create Tags from Hashtags” setting worked, which is how my journal ended up being polluted.

Regardless of the setting, users may change their mind about how to organize their tags, and users wishing to reduce their tag footprint shouldn’t be forced to deal with their current setup due to a lack of tools (in UI, Shortcut-driven, or even CLI-based).

It took me several days to finally clean these up manually. Because I have over 7K entries (~5.5K of which were tagged), I couldn’t just select all entries and remove a tag — that would take anywhere between 10s-30s to accomplish one tag’s removal (if my app didn’t crash). Ultimately, I had to split my journal into multiple journals of 500-1K entries in order for the tag removal to be efficient — even then, it took longer because the tags I might want to remove are now split between multiple journals, so I was essentially repeating my tag deletions.

  • @mcgaritydotme. Thank you for sharing. We’d be happy to forward this request over to the team.
