sync problem
-
Hi I have DayOne Basic, just on my iPhone. After using it without problem for almost a year, about two weeks ago, I started to get sync error messages. When I first open the app the cloud would be solid white, and if I tap on it, it says “Last Sync <current time”. Then after about 2 seconds it shifts to a cloud outline with a line through it, and if I tap on it it says “Sync Status Error” and “There was an error retrieving your encryption key”. Then it offers me a chance to “Enter Encryption Key” But I don’t have an Encryption Key, it’s a Basic account? Please please help! I don’t want to lose my info. Thank you!!!

Hello @susiehometoo! We’ll do our best to help.
Do you see all entries in the app on your iPhone?
Without sharing the key with us, is the encryption key present on any device in the following places?
- iOS: Day One > Settings > Sync > Encryption Key
- Mac: Day One > Settings > Sync > Advanced > View Encryption Key
- Android: Day One > Settings > Sync > Encryption Key

Thank you SO much for responding!!
I do see all the entries in the app on my iPhone. I always have, which is GREAT.
I don’t have it on my Mac and I don’t have an Android. When I go to iOS Day One > Settings < Sync, it says Sync Status “Error” and if I tap on “Sync Status” it says “There was an error retrieving your encryption key” and it gives me an option in blue type “Enter Encryption Key”. I don’t have an encryption key, I have “Basic” level and I never got one. If I go back to the Sync tab, down under the Encryption Key header it says “Enter Encryption Key” in blue letters. If I tap on that it gives me an option to “Scan From Another Device” (I don’t have DayOne on another device), “Enter From Manual Backup” (again I never got a key, I’m on “Basic”), or “Get Help”. Then If I click on “Advanced Sync Settings” it says “Encryption Key is not stored in…” but then it cuts off so I don’t know the rest. It gives me an option to “Only Store Encryption Key in Ke…” but then it cuts off so I don’t know the rest, and it gives me a warning about losing my key so I hit cancel. If I scroll down it also says “Sync is turned on” with a check mark next to it.
So basically I still don’t know why I just started getting a Sync error after months of no problems, and I don’t know what to do now. Thank you!!

If you’re using the same email on your Day One account that you’re using here in the forum, I do see a matching account with 1 encrypted Journal. Because you can’t find the key, but can see the entries on the iPhone I recommend you do a JSON export of the contents there: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/tips-and-tutorials/exporting-entries/ . This will give you an unencrypted copy of your entries for safe keeping.
Then follow the guide you see here to get a new key: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/troubleshooting/getting-a-new-encryption-key/
Please let me know if you have any questions along the way :-)

Hi! I have the same problem up to this point, but when I go to enter the encryption key, it says “it looks like your encryption key was backed up to icloud. Sign in and we’ll retrieve it for you.” But when I click to sign in with icloud, it just takes me to my settings page of my macbook, where I am already logged into icloud. Is there anything I can do? I lost my phone I was using day one on so I cant get the encryption key from it, I really hope its saved in my icloud.

Do you have more than one Apple ID?
May we have you sign in to your Day One account at https://dayone.me/login in a web browser? Once signed in, click Settings on the left side. In the Account section, there is a place to sign in to Apple to retrieve your encryption key. Without sharing any account details or your encryption key with us here, let us know if you are able to retrieve the key via Day One Web.

I have a very similar problem, where today suddenly there’s a sync error saying that the encryption key cannot be found. It was supposed to be stored in iCloud, but I honestly never created one and I just checked and I have no encrypted journals. All my entries can be seen properly on all my devices, and even new entries created after the sync error message still sync across my devices. So, basically, the only issue is the red light turning on, but functionality is not impaired. I already exported as JSON for safety and I read how to get a new encryption key, but it involves deleting my account, which sounds much more dangerous than staying like this, to be honest. Plus, I am a user of DayOne since before the subscription model so I’m very happy to keep my Plus legacy account and not risk losing that, too. If there’s other solutions to this, do let me know.

Hello @rodrigoruizmusic. May we have you update to version 2024.10.2 and let us know if that helps?

The JSON export and following the remainder of the steps will preserve any data you have in the app now. Following the steps now will help you get a new key without deleting any journal data in the app, just your account. You will also retain your Plus/legacy account status as long as you are using the same Apple ID in the App Store that was used to buy Day One before the subscription model was released.
