Sync Error: Unable to Close App Due to “Private key not found …

    Hello Day One Support,

    I’m experiencing a persistent sync issue in the Day One app. The sync status shows an error with the following details:

    • Type: DailyChat
    • Action: UPDATE
    • Message: Private key not found for fingerprint ………… in decrypt-shared-message-key
    • Failed Date: 2025-11-19 08:15:08
    • Date: 2025-11-19 08:10:34

    Because of this error, the sync never completes, and the app will not allow me to close the window until sync is finished—so the app gets stuck in an unresolved state.

    Please help me resolve this issue as soon as possible.

  • That particular error message —

    “Private key not found for fingerprint … in decrypt-shared-message-key”

    — seems to indicate the encryption key wasn’t added correctly.

    Without sharing the key with us, is the encryption key present on any device in the following places?

    • iOS: Day One > Settings > Sync > Encryption Key
    • Mac: Day One > Settings > Sync > Advanced > View Encryption Key
    • Android: Day One > Settings > Sync > Encryption Key
    • Web: Day One > Settings > Account > Encryption Key

    If so, try copying the key and entering it in the device that is giving you the error.

    The issue has been resolved after logging in from scratch.
