Subject: App crashes on first unlock attempt with biometric authentication
Details: I’m running macOS 26 Public Beta 5 with Day One version 2015.17 (1685). Whenever I attempt to open Day One using biometric authentication—either Touch ID on my extended keyboard or a double‑click confirmation on my Apple Watch Ultra 2—the app crashes immediately on the first attempt.
If I relaunch the app right away and repeat the same unlock method, it opens normally without crashing. This behavior is consistent and reproducible every time I launch Day One after it’s been closed.
Steps to reproduce:
- Close Day One completely.
- Launch Day One.
- Authenticate using Touch ID on extended keyboard or Apple Watch Ultra 2 double‑click.
- App crashes.
- Relaunch Day One.
- Authenticate again — app opens normally.
Expected behavior: Day One should open without crashing on the first unlock attempt using biometric authentication.
Additional info:
- macOS 26 Public Beta 5
- Day One 2015.17 (1685)
- Crash occurs regardless of which biometric method is used

Hello @garryburgess!
Day One doesn’t officially support iOS or macOS 26 yet. So this may be an issue with the beta.
I will pass this along to the team for them to look into as we are getting closer to the public OS release from Apple.

This was not a new problem for me though, and I had this problem on all my Macs before I temperarily moved to OS 26. It was only a minor problem because it opened on the second time. It might be related to my Apple Watch because I hear a click as my AppleWatch tries to open it, but it usually doesn’t work. But I can understand why you might rightfully suspect that it is an iOS 26 problem but it’s unlikely because I had the problem for a long time.

I am on macOS 15.6.1 and the Mac Day One app crashes every time I start it the first time each day. It opens the second time. I always submit the report to Apple, so you guys should be able to see crash reports from Apple.

@garryburgess @chadchr We have made some fixes for this on the latest Day One Mac 2025.20.
If you haven’t already, can you update to the latest version and let us know if this is still an issue for any of you?
Thank you.
