Strava integration via IFTTT

I’m struggling to get Strava activities added to a journal using IFTTT. I’m pretty sure I’ve linked everything correctly but no Strava activity triggers an entry in Day One. Has anyone managed to get the ‘Strava Rides and Runs saved to Day One’ applet to work and if so could you please run through the steps I need to take? Thanks in advance.

I was working fine until beginning of April where the integration stopped working for me too.

Ah – OK, thanks – glad it’s not just me! I’m guessing Strava may

_ Strava may have changed their API or something…(sorry – hit reply before I’d finished!)

  • Hello @enkaytee

There are 3 potential places for errors with IFTTT:

    1. The incoming “trigger” service
    2. IFTTT platform
    3. The receiving service (in this case, Day One).

We may be able to help with the 3rd one, but if the problem is happening with 1 or 2, you will need to contact those companies.

Can you open that applet in IFTTT and see if it has successfully “run” and when the last time it ran?

It seems to be an issue with IFTTT – this is a response from IFTTT support on reddit a few days ago:

I’ve had this issue too since mid-April. I contacted IFTTT support and here was my response:

    Hey there,

Just a quick update — we’ve logged an issue with the Strava: “New activity by you” trigger not firing as expected. This has been escalated to our team and it’s being treated as a priority. While we don’t have an ETA at the moment, we’ll be sure to keep you posted as soon as there’s an update.
Rest assured, we’re treating this as a top priority since we have many Strava users on IFTTT.

  • @enkaytee thanks for sharing this with us. Please keep us updated if you get any updates. If you have a link we can use to follow the updates, it would also help :)

I got my IFTTT to Day One running fine yesterday.
    Crossed fingers now…

Yes – can confirm that Strava activities are now syncing to a Day One journal.

The activities are being saved as entries but the map to open in a browser – this is the error I get:

“The Google Maps Platform server rejected your request. You must use an API key to authenticate each request to Google Maps Platform APIs. For additional information, please refer to http://g.co/dev/maps-no-account”

is this a Day One issue?

  • Hi @enkaytee! The issue with the map not loading and showing the Google Maps API error is not on Day One’s end. The Google Maps portion of the Strava → Day One IFTTT applet has historically been a bit unreliable, and it’s actually managed by Strava or IFTTT—not us.

Day One doesn’t use a Google Maps API in this integration, so unfortunately we’re unable to directly fix that part. We recommend reaching out to IFTTT or Strava support if the error continues.

  • If anyone is still having issues, Strava can be now directly integrated into Day One https://dayoneapp.com/features/strava-integration

Thanks – I’ve integrated Strava with Day One but not all my activities have been synchronised. There are currently just over 600 in the ‘Strava’ journal but I’m guessing I probably have around 3000 – 4000 in total. The original 600 arrived pretty much immediately I linked Strava but since then (just over 24 hours) no more have appeared. Has anyone else managed to sync all their Strava activities?

  • Hi @enkaytee

That is intended. For some context, Strava limits their API usage using both a 15-minute and daily request limit: https://developers.strava.com/docs/rate-limits/

In our case, that limit applies to all users, so we try to balance it out when a user has a lot of activities to import.

It can take a couple of days to reflect in Day One, but you can be sure it will eventually import all, as they will still be in the queue for processing.

Hi – just following up on this. I’ve now got pretty much all my historical Strava activities in the Day One journal but there was a day last week (17th November to be precise) when none of my activities were synchronised. Is there a way to force / import individual (or a day’s worth) of activities?

  • Hi @enkaytee,

Would you try disconnecting and reconnecting your Strava integration? (Settings > Integration > Strava)

If you edit an activity in Strava—for example, by adding a description—the change usually won’t update automatically in Day One. You can manually refresh or resync the entry in Day One to pull in the latest updates. Here’s how: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/tips-and-tutorials/strava-integration/#h-how-to-resync-entries

Thanks – I hadn’t seen the Strava Integration page on the website!

  • Unknown's avatar

However, the problem is that there were more than one activities on a particular day and none of them have been added to the journal, so there are no activities to update using the method described. I’m not keen on reconnecting Strava as it took about 3 weeks to populate most of my activities the first time I set it up. Unless there’s a way of syncing one or more individual activities I’ll probably just ignore the missing ones…thanks anyway!

  • Unknown's avatar

OK – so reconnecting Strava didn’t mean all the entries were lost and needed to be synced again, and the missing activities have now appeared – thanks!

I think this can be resolved now…
