Spell check non functional
-
Hello,
I’ve tried to enable spell check and grammar check functionality using the links provided via Day One’s help articles, but I can’t seem to get it to work. I also tried asking Day One’s chatbot about this, and got a completely different answer, which also didn’t work. Please help!

Hello @tipsforpros,
After making changes, have you restarted your Mac?
Could we have you try that? This typically helps with system changes so that they are recognized.
Please keep us posted if this works or not.

Hello @staff-reid sorry for taking forever to get back on this…
I’m using macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 and Day One 2024.7
Still having the same problem…
-
Could you please update your Day One app to version 2024.8 and inform us if you’re still encountering the same issue?

hello @helper-lilly @staff-reid i know it’s been a while since you messaged but I am using now 2024.23 which is far as I know is the updated version. I am still having this same problem.

@tipsforpros Just to make sure we’re on the same page, can you please send us some screenshots of your setting to enable the spell check?
Also, how exactly it’s not working for you? Does it not work for you while you’re typing? If you go to Day One > Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Check Document Now, does it work properly to check any mistakes on your writing?

Hi @staff-fred under “Keyboard” settings for my Mac I have “correct spelling automatically” toggled on (default) as is outlined here on this Apple support article. Please see this screenshot for verification.
I’ve also got the Day One “Spelling and Grammar” settings set as follows: “Check Spelling While Typing” is Toggled ON (default), and “Correct Spelling Automatically” is also toggled ON (default). Please see this screenshot for verification.
My spelling and grammar is checked automatically, and corrected automatically, in every other app that I use. For some reason, it does not work with Day One.
When I try to use “Day One > Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Check Document Now” the option is grayed out for me on any journal entry I try.

This has now been reported to our developers. It will likely take some time to address this particular issue, which unfortunately I don’t have an exact timeframe on.
Thanks for your patience and understanding in the meantime!

Hi @tipsforpros,
We finally figured this out! It seems this might be more of a macOS-level issue than a Day One-specific problem. I was also experiencing this and found that a solution from a Reddit thread resolved the issue for me.
I followed the suggestions in this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/applehelp/comments/zshqay/notes_spell_check_stopped_working/
Specifically, I tried running the Terminal command and changing the “Automatic by Language” setting. I’m not sure which of the two solutions worked, but spell check is now working for me in both Notes and Day One.
Could you please try the solutions outlined in that Reddit thread?
