Search Not Working on macOS App (No Response When Typing)
-
Hello,
I’ve been a long-time user of Day One and truly appreciate the app.
However, the search function on the macOS version has completely stopped working for all past entries.
The issue:
- When I type any keyword (Japanese or English) into the search bar and press Enter, the screen does not change at all.
- There is no loading indicator or spinning animation — absolutely no response.
- Even a newly created test entry cannot be found.
- On iPhone/iPad, search works perfectly, so the journal data itself is not damaged.
My environment:
- macOS desktop app
- Premium account
- macOS updated to the latest version
- Day One version 2025.24 (current latest)
- Entries mostly written in Japanese
This issue makes it impossible to search my past journals, which is one of the main reasons I rely on Day One.
I would be grateful for any advice or fixes.
Thank you.

Thank you so much for your kind words about Day One — we really appreciate your long-time support.
Based on your description, this sounds like an indexing issue. Please try the following steps to rebuild your search index on macOS:
- Open Day One macOS desktop app
- Navigate to Settings
- Select the Support tab
- Under Troubleshooting, click Rebuild Search Index.
Once the app finishes rebuilding, try searching again to see if results appear. For more information, see
If search still doesn’t work afterward, please let us know your current macOS version (e.g., macOS 15.x)

Hello,
I wanted to follow up and share an update.
Clicking “Rebuild Search Index” in the macOS app completely resolved the search issue for me.
I can now successfully search through more than 9,000 entries spanning the past 15 years, and I’m extremely relieved.
Thank you for pointing me to this solution. Day One has been an essential part of my daily life and personal archive for many years, and I’m very happy to continue using it going forward. I’m also looking forward to its future development.
Thanks again for your help and support!
