Real markdown tables
-
Hello, I recognize the fact that this has been noted and allegedly “resolved,” but honestly, I am very dissatisfied with the implementation.
For the user to have to 1) create a code block (via
`), 2) to input markdown inside of the codeblock, and then 3) to have to click the render HTML button to show it is quite inelegant, unintuitive, and really blocks the journaling flow. In addition, when using dark mode, the code block output displays in garish, blinding white background.</p> <p>Might I suggest either 1) return the old markdown syntax and figure out how to resolve the <a href=”https://forums.dayoneapp.com/forums/topic/dayone-mardown/#post-4451″>PDF and Print rendering issue</a> the right way and not just put a bandaid on it, or 2) introduce a automated feature, kind of like how “>” automatically brings up a block quote in the UI, that lets us edit tables in an intuitive way. Or 3) just pitch the markdown and build a table feature into the program, like Apple Notes (but better), so that we can input tabular data.</p> <p>As someone who journals every day, <strong>this is a serious hindrance to my flow of thought</strong> as I end up thinking more about the “program” than about my content that I’m writing. Thanks for your consideration.</p> -
@bobbybosler Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback and suggestions. We understand how the current markdown table workflow can interrupt your journaling flow. Your perspective as a daily user is valuable, and we appreciate the clarity with which you laid out the challenges.
We’ve noted your ideas around restoring old markdown behavior, adding smarter UI triggers, or even introducing native table support. While we cannot make any promises at this time, we’ve noted your input and will ensure it’s included in future discussions as we continue to improve the editor experience. Thanks again for raising this.

@staff-fred Thanks for the response to Bobby’s post. Just want to echo the concern, having to use a code block and manually render tables breaks the flow. A native or more intuitive table option would help streamline things. Hope this gets more attention in future updates.

I’m just going to add a vote for actual markdown tables here. I’ll add that I would be happy with the current workaround if it could be invoked with a slash command.
Also, the “do this in the web app” part of all this is broken: tables keep getting dropped as you move back and forth between the web app and the desktop app.
FTR, it would be nice if markdown remained markdown: editing a link should be an easy matter of using the left arrow to “pop up” or unfold the markdown (a la an app like Typora).

Hi @johnlaudun, thank you for your feedback! I’ve added a +1 on our internal feature request on your behalf.
As for the issue with the table getting dropped, we’d like to get more information about that. Would you mind reaching out to support from the app, or starting a new forum thread with screenshots, so we can see what you’re describing here?
