Premium fees for legacy Plus users

    Hello Day One Team,

    TL;DR in bold

Firstly, thank you as always for working on such an amazing app. I’m on 3,000+ days streak and rarely a week goes by when I’m not recommending Day One to someone.

I’m a legacy Plus user, so already have most of the most valuable benefits offered through Premium. The only feature I’m missing which I value is the ability to upload video.

In light of Apple preparing to release their Journal app this September I’m forced to consider if I want to continue no video option via Day One or gain video upload for free by switching to Journal. It will be a difficult decision and I honestly don’t expect the Journal UI to be as good as Day One, but the lack of video is a daily irritation.

Could you please consider offering a different pricing structure to Plus users? We simply don’t get the same value for money offering with Premium at £32.99. Personally I would be willing to pay closer to £20/year for “Plus+video”. I genuinely have little to no interest in the other Premium features – most of which I already have!

If you pushed this out as a pop-up offer to all Plus users you might get a surprising number signing up.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Hello! Thanks so much for your support in purchasing Day One when it was a one-time paid app. We have always been able to keep the lights on because of our users’ support.

We’d be happy to submit your request to the team for future consideration. We cannot guarantee that this will be an option, but the team does review all user requests. Thanks again!

This is exactly the why I stopped using DayOne.

The developers do not value past users and force you to pay an unrealistic price to upgrade from their Plus tier.

Sadly, besides the standard copy-paste response, they have nothing to offer for Plus users.

Hi @apintindc. Thanks for your feedback. Those with the Plus status keep the legacy features for which they paid forever, including maintenance updates.

Subscribing to Premium allows us to continue developing and maintaining the apps. We don’t have 3rd party ads and we don’t sell user data. The Premium subscription helps employ software and server engineers, customer support, and overhead costs necessary to create and maintain Day One.

Thanks @staff-james. I think you missed the point, which is not premium subscriptions—but allowing plus users to upgrade.

We know you don’t have 3rd party apps, as we were your earliest users. We also know you don’t sell data; again, we were the first to trust you with our personal data. We also know that money is essential, and we paid you during your early days when you were not as known.

The point being questioned here is why you should treat us like new users when we have forever-paid features. Should you not ask for incremental payment for the few new features that may help us rather than making us pay full amounts? @danjamz has graciously explained one possible option which is more than generous towards your monetary ambitions.

I know you will pass this feedback to the team, as you have been doing for several years. But it will be nice to hear specific answers and not the usual cookie-cutter replies.

I hope you will take time to read what OP wrote and respond to the issue raised.

Hello @apintindc. Thanks for following up!

Should you not ask for incremental payment for the few new features that may help us rather than making us pay full amounts?

Premium was available for Plus users for $24.99 USD/year between June 2017 and June 2019 (regular price is $34.99 USD/year). Those that subscribed during that time keep that indefinite discount on Premium as long as the subscription remains active.

I know you will pass this feedback to the team, as you have been doing for several years. But it will be nice to hear specific answers and not the usual cookie-cutter replies.

Unfortunately, the support team cannot provide specific answers on this currently. We submit all requests and votes for the same requests to the leadership team for consideration. We have submitted OPs request for add-on options like Plus+video.

@staff-james perfect reply. We were not expecting anything better. All I can say is that your future will be well deserved.

I am a Legacy member, too, and really don’t need the additional features, but after reading the comments from staff wouldn’t mind doing it for a year to be supportive of this great app. I feel so lucky that I trusted out of the gate and have the Legacy option and that DAYONE didn’t make further purchase mandatory. Anyway, if I do a year, will it be easy to downgrade or once I’m out of Legacy, I’m out of luck?

    Hi @writeitdown2023.

Anyway, if I do a year, will it be easy to downgrade or once I’m out of Legacy, I’m out of luck?

You keep the Plus (legacy) status as a minimum forever as long as you retain the same Apple ID that was used to purchase Day One before June 2017. If you subscribe for one year and then cancel, you will go back to Plus. Hi,

This is my first post on the forum.

I’ve been a Plus iOS/Mac user since it’s introduction. As a Plus user, I don’t need the extra sub/Premium features. So, I never upgraded even though I tried those Premium features when they were discounted, years ago. But I would happily swicth to a sub for a single updated/improved feature, and would have done so years ago in a heartbeat: better tag management.

DayOne is great as it is. The one thing that is a real let down in my opinion is tags.
Tags should be easy/quick to use (apply, search, group, and so on) and to edit and to manage. They’re neither of that, which make them less than ideal to use.

    Hi staff-James

I need to point out something in relation to:

Premium was available for Plus users for $24.99 USD/year between June 2017 and June 2019 (regular price is $34.99 USD/year). Those that subscribed during that time keep that indefinite discount on Premium as long as the subscription remains active.”

At the time, the offer was not properly communicated to Plus users. I found out after the offer expired and I never saw a pop-up or received any communication from Day One about the offer. The marketing manager at Day One at the time advised me that the offer was made via pop-ups in the app. I never witnessed such pop-ups whilst regularly using the app. I checked at the time and no email communications were received from Day One referring to the offer.

I wished to take up the offer but as I stumbled about it after its expiry I was told I was not eligible. I requested that an exception be made given it was not communicated to me and was told absolutely not.

I pointed out that I would not be upgrading to Premium at the full price and that has been the case right up to today.

Day One has therefore forgone revenue from 2019 to 2023 it could otherwise have earned from me had the special offer been honoured, due to its strange intransigence in offering something to a finite number of users but time limiting it. It still evades me as to why it was time limited and why the communications with Plus users were patchy.

  • Hi @addavis01af08d88d5c

The offer for Premium at $24.99 USD/year for Plus users was communicated via pop-up and our initial messaging about the change to Premium and in our FAQ. https://dayoneapp.com/guides/premium-subscription/day-one-premium-faq/

At any point during June 2017 and June 2019, Plus users would have seen the discounted rate when starting the free trial.

While we no longer offer that exact offer, we’d be happy to offer you a coupon for the first year of Premium. Please contact us by email and we can help you with that.

    Hi Frank,

Your offer was not addressed to me but since you posted it here I wonder: have you considered making such a promotion publicly available to all Plus users (and maybe even to a wider-audience)? I mean, as a time-limited promo or something to encourage people to try the Premium feature for a whole year?

I know I’ve been considering upgrading to the sub/Premium plan since the day Apple announced its own Journaling app, as way to show you I will keep using DayOne (it’s the best app, and has been since its first release, imho). But I did not because I have no incentive to upgrade as of now (give us better tags and more export options, and I’ll sign instantly) and because I’m reluctant in paying the full yearly price just to show support. A promo maybe enough to convince me, and probably a few others too.

No idea if the next one is doable at all, but here it is: another incentive could be to reintroduce the life-time discount for existing Plus users, for a short time. Say for DayOne next birthday? Maybe at the condition of renouncing their Plus status they zoudl get the life-time discount? I know a few fellows around me that have been using DayOne for as long as me but did not take the opportunity back then and they regret it (not me) and some that stopped using the lifetime discount and therefore lost it (that would be me).

    Just sayin’ ;)
