Plus User – Encryption Key
-
I just logged in to my journal to find a sync error requiring an encryption key. Both devices I regularly use are saying they don’t have the encryption key. I have no memory of being prompted to save or backup an encryption key in Day One. I’ve navigated to both “iOS: Day One > Settings > Sync > Encryption Key” and “Mac: Day One > Settings > Sync > Advanced > View Encryption Key” but they are both prompting me to enter the encryption key and I cannot view it. I’ve also checked my old laptop, which I used for over ten years, and it also does not allow me to view the encryption key. Besides these three devices, there’s no other device that I’ve used to log in to Day One in at least 3 years.
Looking at the screenshots in the guidelines for setting up end-to-end encryption, I truly never remember seeing that page before. And if I had, I would have saved it to iCloud as a backup (the option is checked but it says the encryption key is not stored in iCloud, which makes sense since I never set this up). If this was automatically enabled, why was I never prompted to set it up? All of the other support threads have not been helpful. I cannot magically produce a key that I’ve never even seen before.

I’m having the same issue. I’m on an Android, and it’s asking for an encryption key that it says I backed up, which I’m not sure I did. Also, I’m a premium member, so why am I unable to email support from the app, like the help section says? This is frustrating.

Hi there!
I have no memory of being prompted to save or backup an encryption key in Day One.
A recent update to the iOS app started prompting users for the encryption key if one wasn’t found. However, there was a bug in that it would prompt for the key even if you did not have any encrypted journals. If this is the case for you, then you can ignore the prompt.
I’m on an Android, and it’s asking for an encryption key that it says I backed up, which I’m not sure I did.
You should be able to retrieve your encryption key via your iOS device. Instructions on finding the key are in this guide: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/settings/how-to-set-up-end-to-end-encryption/
Also, I’m a premium member, so why am I unable to email support from the app, like the help section says? This is frustrating.
The support contact form was added in the most recent update to the app, can you ensure you have updated to the latest version? Then in the app settings you select Support -> Contact Support.

I just paid for the Premium subscription 2 days ago. DayOne is now asking for encryption key. I don’t have one. I never did. (I tried the free Basic plan in 2019).
And any journal created is automatically End-to-End; requiring the Encryption key to sync across devices.
This is pretty lousy: cannot create journals that can be synced because there is no key other than deleting my account. Which will take 5-6 days. And then, do I have to pay again? -

I’m having the same issue – I’m a legacy Plus user and just tried creating a new journal. It asked me for an encryption key that I never before have entered or was prompted for. Any advice?

@lippihom it is possible the encryption key was created on a device in the past since you have the legacy status. https://dayoneapp.com/guides/troubleshooting/finding-a-lost-encryption-key/
If you cannot locate the encryption key AND you have all journal entries in the app on at least one device, you can get a new key: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/troubleshooting/getting-a-new-encryption-key/
