Persistent Store Migration
-
I recently got a new computer. Restored from Time Machine backup. I am unable to open Day One on my MacOS system. “An error occurred during persistent store migration”.
I have tried uninstalling the app and reinstalling from the App store. Doesn’t work.I am still able to make entries on my iPad and iPhone.
macOS Ventura 13.4.1(c)
MacBook Pro M2 Pro chip
Day One app: 2023.14 (downloaded from App store)I’m thinking I probably need to delete the app, and my journals from my computer. Reinstall the app and sync data.
I want to find out if that is the best thing to do.
If so, where are the journals stored on my local disk? -
Hello! That is frustrating. We are here to help. When uninstalling, did you follow the steps in this guide, particularly steps 3-5?
Uninstalling and Reinstalling Day One for macOS
If not, can you try that and let us know if that helps.

See, that’s the thing, I cannot access the SETTINGS menu in Day One on my Mac.
The journal syncs between my iPad and iPhone. And I actually just set up a Day One Sync account on my iPad.
And I seem to have possibly made things a bit worse, I seem to have 2 accounts. my main account, that everything is linked / synced with (between the iPad/iPhone), is associated with lirleni at gmail dot com, however the Day One Sync is linked to cattaur at gmail… Sorry…

See, that’s the thing, I cannot access the SETTINGS menu in Day One on my Mac.
For this issue, you can skip the step to save the key if it is present on your iPhone/iPad.
- iOS: Day One > Settings > Sync > Encryption Key
I seem to have 2 accounts
Please sign out of the second account and sign back in with the account you wish to use: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/troubleshooting/sign-in-sign-out-with-day-one-sync

OK, I have signed out of cattaur. Logged into Lirleni on web / sync.
I have deleted the Day One app on my macOS system, and emptied the trash.
Redownloaded the app, installed, and still get the persistent store migration.

I’m glad you were able to delete the app! When doing so, were you able to follow steps 3 + 4 of our guide?
3. Paste this into the Go to Folder window in Finder:
~/Library/Group Containers/5U8NS4GX82.dayoneapp2/. (See screen shots below.)4, Drag the entire folder to your Mac Desktop. (This contains a local copy of your journal data backups and might be useful if any problems arise when you reinstall and reimport your data into Day One Mac.)
Those will remove the data that I think has the issue for you, so it’s important to know if you tried this, or if you’ve tried it and it didn’t work for you.

Did them, and it did work this time. on the reinstall I was able to log into the Day One app, and initiate sync.
Somehow, my mind was conflating the saving of the encryption key with moving the Group Container folder… No idea why…
Does it matter that there is a
~/Library/Group Containers/5U8NS4GX82.dayoneapp/folder, as well as a dayoneapp2/ folder? I assume I can delete the one on the desktop eventually? -
@lirleni Great to hear!
The folder without the
2is for Day One Classic (version 1). As long as all data is in the current version of Day One, you are safe to permanently delete the~/Library/Group Containers/5U8NS4GX82.dayoneapp/folder.Once all data is back in the app on Mac, you can delete the folder on the desktop.
