Password Protection

The password protection settings keeps resetting back to disabled. I have enabled it twice now, and it works fine for a while and then several days later, it’s disabled and Day One no longer prompts for my password.

  • Hello there,

Thanks for contacting us and bringing this to our attention. I’ll do my best to help you.

Is this happening in the Mac, iOS, or Android app?

Have you noticed any pattern to when this is disabled? Is something done within the app or on the device that then might have disabled the password?

    I also have this issue.

This is happening in the Mac app.

I enable password protection and leave the app open and locked and from time to time the app is not locked anymore and the security settings seemed to reset, I have to re-enable the password protection and give a password.

  • Thanks for reporting this to us.

We will reach out shortly through email to get some more information about this.

The password protection on my computer works fine. However, I managed to find my journal’s videos, audios, thumbnails and photos in another file on my hard drive that were not password protected 🤯. The files were in a folder called “DayOne”. I use only Apple products. Can you instruct me what to do about this matter?

The password protection is ok overall, but one thing that I find annoying is that if I uninstall the app and install it again, and then sign in, my journals are unlocked by default. I have to re-enable password protection for it to work.

This means that if someone had access to my iPhone, and wanted to snoop around my journals, they would easily be able to do so. How can I submit a feature request for better password protection?

This may be a great topic for another thread. Day One stores data locally on each device by design. That way, users have access to their content, whether online or not. We recommend using separate user profiles if the computer is being shared. Also, you can enable FileVault to encrypt the entire Mac hard drive.

    I hope this helps.

Great question! When reinstalling the app, users need to sign in to the account again in order to gain access to the content. Are you looking for an additional passcode besides account login credentials? If you could let us know more about the passcode protection you would like to see, please do so!
