On This Day widget’s color theme doesn’t follow system appearance

The color of On This Day widget doesn’t follow the system’s light/dark appearance setting. The widget is always light if there’s any entry from previous years, or dark if there’s no entry. It looks very out of place.
In all the official screenshots, the On This Day widget is shown with a picture. This is probably not an issue if there’s a picture. However, most of my entries are just text, so it’s quite annoying.
FWIW, the Daily Prompt widget follows the system appearance setting as expected.

I’d also like an option to not display photos and just display the number of entries in the On This Day widget
