On device encryption

For a private Journal, on device encryption would be a killer feature. At the moment, somebody having access to the Computer can access the journal (even as there is no passcode lock, cf. https://forums.dayoneapp.com/forums/topic/windows-web-app-passcode-lock/). I know that a common opinion is that we have to secure the computer but nevertheless there are options to implement disk encryption so that two scenarios are safe:

    1. Someone having access to the computer.
    2. A malware attack stealing the database.

Standard Notes for example has on device encryption and it let me feel very safe. But Standard Notes is not really designed for journaling. So if Day One would be the first real journal implementing this, this would be a real USP.

In the same time, it should be possible to change the encryption key and 2FA would be very important.

  • @cryptycus Thanks, I’ve added your feedback to our internal feature request for this.
