I get that journals have end to end encryption when uploaded, but I don’t know if they are secure on my iPad and other devices. Thanks

We prioritize the security of your data on all devices. The way we store local data is tailored to harness the best security practices of each respective operating system.
For instance, on iOS, Day One data is stored within a “sandbox”, ensuring it’s isolated from other apps. Furthermore, this data is encrypted locally using iOS’s Data Protection technology.
If you’re concerned about someone gaining access to your physical device and attempting to unlock it, we highly recommend setting a Passcode specifically for Day One for an additional layer of security.
