No location history

I noticed today that the Location History in my journal is empty. Settings->Location History-> shows “0 Places.”
As recently as early September, if I went to the “On this Day” tab for a given calendar day I would see the various stops I had made along the day and I could create a summary as a new entry in that journal.
I upgraded to a new iPhone (and the new iOS) in late September. But what is odd is that even if I go back to entries years ago that used to have location history, all that data is gone.
The DayOne has “Always” and “Precise Location” access toggled in the iOS settings app.

Thanks for reaching out to us about this. At the moment, Location history data is not synced to our servers. That means that if you get a new phone and don’t transfer your old data, then the new device wouldn’t have it.
We do hope to improve this behaviour in a future version of our app.

Well, that explains that.
Appreciate the response. After many years of restoring from backup when building a new iPhone, I opted to do a “fresh start” this go around for security reasons. Alas.
And yes, I would love if syncing that (relatively small, it being just text) data across devices becomes possible in the future.
