New Interface – WHERE ARE THE COLORS?

    Dear Day One Support
So I don’t think you understand what you did when you pulled the colors out of your app journals and made all basically white.

Many of us use daily journalling in the middle of the day to manage our emotions.  I started journaling in Day One on IOS after the huge loss of a loved one. It was a place I could go where I could write down my feelings NOT in a WORK APP.  I made it a colorful place with multiple colorful journals.

Now I am a mess.  An emotional mess, for I feel something else has been TAKEN away from me for NO reason.  That’s it.  That’s it in a nutshell. See how that connects up?

This is not a work app.  Why would you take out the color – the creativity or emotion, that creates a safe place to write?

I was just at a coffee shop where I do a lot of my journaling and it didn’t feel right, and like, it is a whole different app.  I couldn’t really do it, and I felt uncomfortable in a place that was my only comfort in a world gone mad.

THIS WAS A TERRIBLE CHOICE especially for those who felt safety, in the interface.  And I know this SOUNDS funny.

But this is not Funny.  This is a real problem.  Probably for many.

Please make the new interface an OPTION or the old interface an option.

Do not DECIDE for your customers, especially about Color, when this app is so important to many to manage their emotions and their lives.

This app is used for many things, a lot of it to help people through bad times in their lives.

Please put the old Color interface back.  Please don’t do this to your loyal customers, and I was loyal, but that form letter you sent me is just rude.

Please give us the choice to go WHITE with little tiny color icons and a terrible lateral list that looks like WORK, IF WE WANT.

Let those who like the Colors, who like pretty journals and who find the colors soothing and safe, have those colors.

Do the right thing and take care of your customers.

I am so so upset by this for it wasn’t an option, like death isn’t an option.

Do you get it? Can you be responsible to your customers and THEIR needs, not IMPOSE on your customers YOUR cool new design?

And so many people are journalling after loss, why would you change their safe place?

For a company with a wonderful journaling app, I don’t think you understand all your customers.  It is not newer and better, it is excellent and consistent, and then your customers will be excellent and consistent. There are so many features now, why take away COLOR for more features?

I don’t want more. I need excellent and consistent.
    Please help me out.

If you can’t, I need to be refunded for the remainder of my subscription.  Will I still be able to read and access my old journals or do I need to export them?
I really don’t want to do this. I just want my color interface back so it feels safe and the same.

    Please help me out.

    Please help us out.

  • Hi @manhattanrep,

Thank you for sharing your candid feedback with us. I understand how significant a role the app plays in providing a safe and comforting space for you, and the impact of UI changes in your situation.

We have received similar feedback from other users regarding the removal of colors from the journals, and we are actively exploring ways to reintroduce color elements and distinct visual cues to enhance the user experience. Your suggestion to make the new interface optional is valuable, and I have added it to our ideas board for consideration by our development team.

Our team recently published summaries of changes we’ve implemented and how we’re reflecting on feedback we received so far to inform our future improvements, here: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/release-notes/new-navigation-layout-2024-11/

In the meantime, please know that we are committed to making Day One a place where you can continue to find solace and express your emotions freely. Your feedback is crucial in helping us improve, and we appreciate your patience as we work towards a solution that meets the needs of all our users.

Thank you once again for reaching out and sharing your thoughts.

Yes I have a similar issue. I paid for (I think it was the Pro ) version because I liked the feedback on how good the app was and I saw the colourful interface in the ‘A’ app on my iMac.

I have been tearing my hair out trying all sorts of stuff to get some colour in this interface with no luck.

I then bought a different one and had the same issue.

I finally bought one called Everlog that can sync between my iPhone and iMac but again with the colour issue. Seems all of the creative bright sparks live in a black and white world nowadays??

So I am now several dollars lighter for the annual subscriptions which leaves me the choice of trying to make my own colourful app out of Word, Excel, Publisher or maybe Filemaker Pro. Or just give up on the idea of creating my own journal that syncs between my iMac and iPhone with a pleasant interface altogether.

I take note of the response to your question to the makers of the Day One app and I’m not convinced by their rhetoric that anything will happen in the near future due to considerable more investigation. Seems a bit like ‘the cheque is in the mail’ kind of response. Sounds good but ???

  • @pclausen245 More color has been added back in our most recent update. If you’re not running the latest version, please update.

We take user feedback seriously and consider many suggestions all the time. Adding color back was one of the suggestions we listened to and completed while still maintaining the new global navigation UI change.

I have just downloaded the latest app from the Apple App Store this morning. It looks the same as the last one I downloaded a few weeks ago.

There is no colour option anywhere that I could find, except for the opportunity install a small, passport size photo in the left panel for a single entry only.

There is no template for a background colour or photo that will brighten up your work every day in the main story entry. There is no colour, patterned frame either.

Is the colour you speak of, only for the Windows version or is it mainly for America, Canada and UK countries? I have sometimes found this to be the case with different programs relating to other items in years gone by. I live in Australia.

  • @pclausen245 can you contact us directly and share some screenshots of what you’re seeing and explain a bit more what exactly you’re expecting? We may just may not be understanding what is expected.
