New design 30th May 2024 = removed quick access to templates, why?

  • Unknown's avatar

I used to tap and hold the + and get access to my most used templated with one tap. Now you’ve done the redesign that has gone and I have to mess about to get to a new template. Why have you removed the tap and hold + and change it to ‘click +, then tap templates, then tap the one i want’. In what way is that a progressive step? And yes I am annoyed when you remove a feature that was easy and change it to something that takes longer. Why?

I can’t access my templates at all. It went from asking me when I made a new entry to now forcing every entry to be the same one with no way to change it at all.

Sane here. I can no longer access my templates without a lot of pulling my hair out. Annoying as hell. At this time, i consider DayOne broken and useless.

I feel inconvenienced that I can no longer easily access my templates. I don’t understand why this change was made, and it would be helpful if it could be reverted to how it worked before. Could you please explain the reason for this change and provide an update schedule for future releases?

    Hi there! @actuallylook, @72g4bs4rs5, @tsuyo4wa, @fkht9h4hcw

In the new interface, you can tap the plus button to create a new entry. This will present you with several options, including Photos and Templates in the bottom panel.

If you cannot see these options, double-check to ensure your entry is blank. Any existing Title or default template in the entry won’t display these, so you’ll need to erase any existing content in the entry to see the options.

I’ve included a screenshot below showcasing the bottom panel:

I’ve given the new design a chance and this part of it is rubbish. Bring back the ‘tap and hold’ so i can get to my templates quickly like it used to be. There is nothing good about the design here.

Allow me to elaborate…. I only add photo’s whilst inside a new entry so the ‘photos’ button above is useless.

I’ve never used ‘suggestions’ yet, so the fact it’s taking up a slot is yet again wasted and useless.

I’ve never yet used audio in all the years I’ve used Day One. Why? What possible use could I need it for? Record myself? I have better app’s to do that with. Again, taking up a slot and useless.

Overall this part of the re-design has made things worse and harder to get to. The awesome thing I had has been removed for something that is more clunky and a backwards step. Before I could tap and hold and have access to my most used templates. Now I have nothing. So no, it’s nothing I will enjoy using.

To pick up on your last sentence, there is nothing “challenging” about it. It’s just rubbish. It’s as bad as finding templates on my Mac by having to go through multiple menu’s just to use one. Jeesh.

  • Hello @fkht9h4hcw!

We appreciate everyone’s feedback on the new design. We are listening to users when they report the things they love and the things they miss.

Before I could tap and hold and have access to my most used templates. Now I have nothing. So no, it’s nothing I will enjoy using.

This function will be coming back in a future update.

Hi, I just installed your new update where the tap and hold feature is back BUT it isn’t working right. When you tap and hold the + it brings up the quick menu, however also instantly adds an entry in the background before one is chosen. So for me, I tap and hold + and the quick menu appears, it instantly creates a personal entry I don’t want, then I choose my own template and it creates that correctly. The bug is it creates an entry that is. It being asked for.

the end of my above sentence should read “an entry that is NOT being asked for”

  • @fkht9h4hcw I was unable to reproduce this issue on my end. Would you help us understand the problem better by taking a video of the issue?

  • Unknown's avatar

I see others too have the issue with the empty entry being also added when using the tap and hold. I also have it, every time I am on the main screen, then press and hold and pick a template, what I am getting is two entries, one empty and one with the template. It also happened that the empty entry was added to the journal I was currently in, and the template one was added to the default journal for that template (so two entries, each in a separate journal).

I wonder whether @staff-dexter can’t reproduce it because he is trying with the pre-defined templates? In my case all templates I have issues with are templates I manually created at some point in the past (I don’t know whether it happens with the pre-defined templates or not, as I don’t use those, but it makes sense that someone who doesn’t really use a journal would try with one of them, since they wouldn’t have any custom defined).

  • Unknown's avatar

Actually @staff-dexter, I just noticed that even when you don’t pick a template the empty entry still gets created. Steps to reproduce: from the main screen, press and hold the + button, and that is enough to create that empty entry (it’s definitely reproducible, I’ve done it multiple times now and it happens all the time).

@zq6t9fg9gb can you let me know which version of the app you’re using when the issue with the + button and duplicate entries happens for you? We released 2024.13, and I’m wondering if that’s the version you’re having issues with, or our beta 2024.14

  • Unknown's avatar

The version I am using is 2024.13

  • @zq6t9fg9gb Can we have you update to version 2024.14?

    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/day-one-journal-private-diary/id1044867788

The link above should take you right to that update.

The long press option for the create entry button should be available in 2024.13 and on.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi @staff-reid, I was talking about how the long press was not working properly in 2024.13, so yes, I was aware the option was there.

Anyway, the issue doesn’t seem to be happening anymore in the latest version, so all is good.

I’m glad 2024.14 resolved this for you @zq6t9fg9gb! Please, let us know if we can help with anything further.
