Moved journal from old phone to new one, past entries don’t appear on new phone

I bought a new phone. When I downloaded and tried to access Day One on it through my Google account, I found out free accounts can’t access it on more than one device, and the app asked if I wanted to move my journal to the new phone. I did that.
However, the Day One on my new phone was a clean slate, and none of my past entries appeared on it. Now I can’t even access my past entries on my old phone since the app say I can’t access it on two devices at once.
Is this the way it is, or is it a bug? Thankfully I exported my journal before moving, but I THINK my old entries weren’t deleted since I can briefly see them before the window blocking the app shows up on my old phone. Is it safe to keep using it on my new phone until I can move again in 30 days?
More details: app on the old phone was not up to date at the time. I updated it already, but didn’t change anything.
