Missing images after switching to end to end encryption

    I recently switched a few old journals to « end to end encryption ».
    I then discovered that multiple entries have lost original images, preview is available, but not the full definition file.

    I sent a request to support 3 days ago, no answer yet.

    Anyone here facing this issue ?

    3 days later, still no feedback from support, being a premium user this is really unfair.
    Issue is still there.
    After switching old journals to end to end encryption, many images are missing, only previews are displayed.
    Encryption key is present on all devices (iPhone, iPad, MacBook).

    Any help will be appreciated if anyone from support has any intention to help.

    Still waiting for support answer …

    In the mean time I investigated on my own and found that some missing images on iPhone/iPad were visible on MacOS app.
    I then edited those entries on Mac, adding a line or changing a word, and for most of the entries syncing to iOS devices helped getting bac full definition images (the missing ones).

    Not yet 100% solved as some full def files are not in my Mac library anymore, so it seems that Day one lost my pictures.

    Useful info, Mac app library shows your audio, video and pictures files here :
    ~/Library/Group Containers/5U8NS4GX82.dayoneapp2

    Copy this address and paste in Finder with “Open folder …”

    Update : support did some investigations, and then created a bug ticket as they have no immediate answer to give.

    In the meantime, I check my past years entries as I do every morning. When they have only previews, or if image is missing, editing the entry loads back most of the high res. images.

    I had issues back when I changed some of my older journals E2E Encryption. For a couple of the journals, it was a waiting game for everything to sync because I had so many entries.

    On the ones that seemed to have the most trouble, I created a new, E2E encrypted journal that was the same as the old one and just copied or moved entries into that new one.

    From what I remember (as this was a while ago now), the reason for the issue is that server-side, your entries are temporarily stored in a different location and then re-created in the journal for which you enabled the encryption.

    Are the images missing from the Mac as well?

    1. If you tap Settings > Sync > Storage is Optimize Device Storage checked?
    2. Does the media restore itself if you check “Download All Media” in Settings > Sync > Storage?
    3. Have you recently moved entries from one journal to another?
    4. What method was used to add the missing images? Did you share them to the app or upload them directly in an entry while editing?
