markdown with commas, colons, semicolons, etc.

In DayOne I can’t use something like *text*, → the comma at the end prevents the “text” string to change to italic. The same happens for *text*; or *text*: etc. It doesn’t happen with the dot, so *text*. results correctly in text. ← italic.

It’s the same for bold, highlighted text, and all the markdown syntax.

Is this normal? Could you fix it?

  • Hello @mrdoll10,

Thank you for your feedback. I will pass this feedback along to our team.

May I suggest a workaround in the meantime? Try typing *text* (no comma after), then a space, then deleting the space, and then typing your comma. This should give you the formatting you are looking for.

Hello Shelley, thanks for the reply. That workaround was the first I’d tried, but doing so the comma and all the following text inherit the format properties, so I should write *text*, make the space, delete it, then press command+i to disable italic, and then write the comma and all the other text.

The best markdown experience for me is in the IA Writer app, where the markdown signs don’t disappear but transform the text inside them, and in the Byword app, where the sings are “greyed out”. Both of these apps have also a focus mode and above all a typewriter mode, other very cool features to implement :).

  • Thanks for that suggestion @mrdoll10! I will make sure to relay it to our design and development team.
