Make it easy to add entries to past dates

After bouncing around between different diary apps, I’m trying Day One premium plan and have been using it for a month now. I love its feature-richness and the iPhone app is great, but I feel quite a lot of friction in the user experience on the Mac app.

    The Problem

The most annoying of them is that adding an entry to a past date is difficult.

In a day view (e.g. when clicked on a date in the calendar view), when there’s no entry on the day, a “New Entry” button is visible, which is fine. But when there’s one or more entries, the New Entry button is gone and the only option is to right-click the date and then click “Create New Entry”, which is bad.

I mostly journal all at once every few days, and I add separate entries per event. So this problem hurts my smooth journaling experience. There must at least be a button to create a new entry “on that date”, always displayed.

What’s worse is that I forget it regularly and click the top-right “+” button, which only creates an entry for today. So I immediately close it and look for a way to add an entry on the day. Then I realize the empty entry that’s just created still exists, So I have to find it again and remove it manually. On top of that, I can’t even right-click on the entry in the day view, so I have to open it to remove it.

    Suggestion

When I’m in a day view, the top-right “+” button must add an entry to that day, instead of today. Also, the entries in the day view should be at least right-clickable.

    Thank you.

When you create an entry for “today, that day”, you can easily change the date of this entry to whatever date you want, event in the past.

I know that I can change the date after creating an entry, but it is quite cumbersome to change the date every time I add one. (As I said, I usually add multiple entries per day.)

Also, it’s worth noting that on the iPhone app, in contrast to the Mac app, there’s a “+” button on the top-left of the day view which creates an entry on that date, not today.

  • Hi @queuedq!

Thanks for taking the time to share this feedback with us. I can confirm that we have added it to our ideas board for consideration :)
