Mac app not syncing journal entries to iOS/web
-
So I turned on end-to-end encryption on 2 of my journals a couple of days ago (in the Mac app), and it seems to have broken the app’s ability to sync automatically. Here’s some of the troubleshooting steps I’ve tried:
- Updating iOS and MacOS to the latest versions, no differences.
- Adding a new journal, and then a new entry in that journal. The journal (and templates) sync, the entry does not.
- Logging out and back in. If I force the app to sync after this, then it syncs around 20–30 entries at a time, and then gets stuck again.
- Waiting for a couple of hours in case I was rate-limited, no luck.
- Exporting my entire set of journals (3k+ entries) on the Mac, and importing that JSON zip file. After having a dup. set of journals, now in the app and in iOS/web, it syncs about ~400 of the new journal entries and then gets stuck.
- Deleting an entry on the web deletes the entry on the Mac, but deleting an entry on the Mac doesn’t do anything on the web.
So I’m thinking something on the Mac app is broken and not syncing back up to Day One cloud, except in certain cases where signing in and out of the app forces it to sync a small subset of all the entries.
Anybody else run into this?

One more troubleshooting step: Exporting the JSON ZIP, sending it to the iOS app and importing the ZIP there, I get the 3k entries now in the iOS app but it syncs only 390 entries (again, out of 3k+) to the web & mac app. So I’m tempted to say this is some sort of sync rate limiting, or sync is completely unreliable and broken.

I have exactly the same experience. It started a week or so ago. I did turn on some end-to-end encryption, but it may have been after the last macOS update

I’m sorry to hear sync has been troublesome for you lately. Reading over your messages it sounds like 2 things could be causing you issues.
The first thing you’d want to do is make sure you have that new encryption key on all devices. You can find it in the following places, then copy from one into another if it’s not showing, to resolve the sync issues:
- iOS: Day One > Settings > Sync > Encryption Key
- Mac: Day One > Settings > Sync > Advanced > View Encryption Key
- Android: Day One > Settings > Sync > Encryption Key
The second issue could be a known bug we’ve found with sync that affects both the Mac and iOS apps. Our team has created a correction for the issue and are going to be releasing it as soon as possible. If the next update to your Mac and iOS apps doesn’t resolve this issue, please do let us know so we can keep digging into this with you.

I’m pretty sure it’s not an encryption key issue, because I have already had to input the encryption key (for the web version, explicitly so every time I log in), but also b/c the journals do show up pretty much immediately, it’s just not updating all the entries, but about ~100 at a time per journal (sometimes less, sometimes more). The behavior is consistent w/ the hypothesis I put above: that everything works, but the amount of entries being synced is severely limited each time.

Thanks for following up. We believe the release of 2023.10.1 on the App Stores should resolve this issue. Could you update to 2023.10.1 on the App Stores as soon as it is available and let us know if the sync issue persists?

I’ve updated to 2023.10.1 and everything seems to be back in sync now. Changes on my Mac now appear on all other devices. I’ll keep an eye on it to see if it stays this way. Many thanks

Confirming that sync is back and all of the entries are showing up across Mac/iOS/web. Thanks for your help!
