Lost data
-
I just signed in and lost data.
I can’t find the version history either, what should I do? -
Sorry to hear that your data is missing. Can you tell me more about what happened? Responses to the following questions will provide us with some information to best assist you.
- When did you first download Day One?
- Did you previously sign in to a Day One Sync account in the app settings? (The app can be used without being signed in, but it won’t back up to our servers in this state.)
- Was all your data gone, or just partially?
- Do you have some of the data on one device and not on the other?
The following guide has all recovery options possible for Day One journal data: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/data-loss-and-recovery-options/
If that doesn’t help then I would suggest you contact Day One Support from the e-mail you signed up with so we can talk securely about your account.
To access Premium support, go to Day One on iOS/Android > Settings > Support > Contact Support to start an email with the default mail client.
Please include the following if possible:
- Device info (Mac, iOS, Android)
- Day One version number on all devices
- Day One User ID
Hopefully that’s helpful 🙂

I also lost YEARS of data on my phone and laptop some time in late august / early september with no warning and no action of my own doing.
I just looked into getting support and I see that I have to upgrade from my paid Plus account to Premium in order to have the privilege of talking with someone about how you all trashed my data. This has produced pretty severe fracture in my trust of Day One which is unfortunate since the whole point of the product is that it’s a place you can trust to document your inner thoughts.
Fortunately I just realized that I hadn’t yet opened Day One on my ipad since this happened.
I put my ipad on airplane mode. I opened Day One and sure enough there were hundreds of entries spanning the last 12 years. I exported them as JSON and saved them to my Files. Then I exited Day One entirely (quit the app by swiping it off the screen) so that it wouldn’t try to sync. Then I turned off airplane mode and my Files synced. The JSON backup file appeared on my desktop. I opened my laptop Day One app and imported and they all moved over safely.
Unfortunately I’ve lost all but one of my august entries and probably some early September entries. Also this only worked because I had it running on another device that I hadn’t sync’d in a while – long enough of a time to not lose everything but not so long that I’m missing the last year or so of data.
This is pretty f’d up. You guys should do something make your customers whole. I would appreciate it if you could help me restore the entries that I lost in august. But I don’t want to post personal info like my DayOne id here. That’s not a very security conscious thing to ask people to do and it doubly makes me question how much I can trust Day One.
I’m disappointed in you.

Hello @peterchester. Thanks for posting. That is incredibly frustrating. If we can do anything to restore data from August, we’d love to help.
Protecting journal data is a top priority. Day One supports several backup methods, most of which can be used concurrently to avoid data loss: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/day-one-sync/backup-and-sync-options-on-ios-and-macos.
No need to post your account information here. As a Plus user, you can still receive support. Go to Day One on iOS/Android > Settings > Support > Contact Support to start an email with the default mail client. If you receive an automated reply, simply send another response and we will be with you as soon as possible.

Hello @staff-d1greg :
The first time I downloaded it was probably around 2017. I used it on iPhone and Mac before. Currently, some of my data has disappeared.
The method you provided cannot restore the data, and the contact email cannot be found. What should I do? -
Hello @itsiris816. I reached out to you via email so that we can get more information from you related to your account. Let us know if you did not receive the message.

I have lost all of my journal entries. I have tried some of the suggestions through Day One. I am really frustrated. Is there anyway that I can chat with someone directly?
