Location Services not working with Day One on Mac Mini
-
For some reason Day One doesn’t automatically enter my location when using Day One on the Mac Mini.
It’s enabled under System Preferences/Location Services and in the Day One app the auto-add location switch is turned on.
Is there anywhere else that I need to check? T
Thanks

Yeah same for me. Running Sonoma on an Intel Mac mini.
I tried unplugging the Ethernet cable so it was only using WiFi. Since Apple API doesn’t allow location querying over Ethernet.
This worked for a couple entries but then it stopped working again.
My MacBook and iPhone works fine. -
Hello @marts57 and @justin54143d68fc,
Could I have you both share what version of Day One you’re currently using?
We’ve done some testing on our end with a MacBook Pro and a Mac Mini, and we aren’t able to reproduce this on our end.
Could we have you both try to disable and then enable location services for Day One to see if that helps? I would suggest restarting your device after doing this and then open Day One to see if locations are then added.
Settings > Privacy & Security > Locations Services > Day One > toggle off and back on > restart Mac Mini
As mentioned above, the Mac would need to be connected to wifi and not Ethernet for this to work.
Keep us posted.

Hello,
My version is currently 2024.2 (1534). I’m running Sonoma 14.3.1 on a 2018 Intel Mac mini.
I disconnected my ethernet, turned off location in Privacy settings for both the Day One app and the menu helper app. And then immediately turned them back on. Auto-add location is on in the helper and Day One settings.
I then restarted my Mac. Tried an entry via the quick entry menu helper. And one directly in the app. Neither got the location.
I’ve done a clean install of both Ventura & Sonoma to test this without any other installed apps. Ventura worked a bit better but it was intermittent. Sonoma seems to work occasionally but is more rare.
When Ventura didn’t add location, I could go into Edit > Location and click on the location arrow icon in the top left of the map. I would be asked if I wanted to add my location. Which worked. In Sonoma, clicking that arrow does nothing.

Yes, Maps picks up my location, as does Google Maps.
I just had another play with this. It doesn’t automatically enter my location. I have to zoom down on the map to find my location. Then it will use it. In the case of the Mac Mini, it’s “Home”, where I live.

Hi,
Same problem here – M1 MacBook Air, macOS 14.3.1, Day One 2024.3 (1536), Day One enabled in Location Services, automatic adding of location selected in Day One prefs. If I manually add location by right-clicking the footer of an entry, I can put in a manual address, but I can’t select an automatically identified location. Apple Maps locates me correctly if I check that app.
If I add in a manual location, Day One will then pull in the weather information as well.
This is pretty annoying, and it sounds like a bug, perhaps with the latest macOS update from the other week? Day One seemed to be working fine before then.

I’m on Day One 2024.3 (1536) as well now. Apple Maps works OK but Day One is still not pulling in the location.
Note I have always been able to manually set it by typing in the address, but no automatic functionality.

I’ve been testing this with no ethernet cable. On WiFi only with no luck.
I just tried connecting my Mac mini to my iPhone personal hotspot. This worked! Got location info immediately.
I’ve since switched back to WiFi and it is still working… Even on app restart.
So some network issue blocking the location query? Our WiFi is wide open really. DNS is provided by our network Windows server but that just forwards it to Google DNS.
I’ll try manually setting my DNS to google’s or something if it starts happening again.

Running Day One 2024.4 (1539) now. Still seeing the issue.
If I just change a network setting (WiFi access point, enable/disable hotspot, DNS) then location will begin to work for about an hour. Then it goes out again.

Hi @justin54143d68fc. Thanks for the troubleshooting information! Day One uses Apple’s location API for location data. As long as the Mac is using Wi-Fi, the location data should be added when creating new entries, especially if you are seeing accurate location data in Apple Maps. We will share this with our engineers.

Hi All, justin54143d68fc here.
Still seeing this same behavior in 2024.18(1590). Any update as to when this will be addressed? Any further info needed from me?

Hi @justins79. Thanks for posting. This issue is still under investigation. We do not have an ETA just yet. Thanks for your patience.

@umangs94 We’ve already implemented fixes for this. If you’re still experiencing issues, however, can you check if you’re running anything like Little Snitch? That can cause system-wide issues with location services.
